Hello,

We are repainting two kids rooms with a light lavender and a light lime green (in eggshell or satin or whatever can be wiped) over contractor grade standard tan flat paint. I would love to use one of the new paint / primer in one can options but only if they really work.....It is not budget friendly if the coverage is terrible!!:rotfl:

So any recent experience with the Glidden Duo (home depot) or a similar produt at Lowe's, Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore etc...
thanks!

Not recent, but I've had good luck with standard Glidden paint. Do not use Behr, that stuff was terrible. After two coats the tan primer was still peeking through.

I have to respectfully disagree withg the negative review for Behr paint. We've never had problems with Behr. For our kitchen we used their premium plus ultra, which combines paint and primer and it did an excellent job of covering. We painted over a red wall with an olive type of color and I could have gotten away with one coat, but I did two just because that's what I've always done. Some habits are hard to break.

First, I do not believe that you can only use one coat of paint and make it look good. You really need to do two coats (either primer and paint or two paint coats), no matter what the paint type.

That said, I have painted every room in our house myself, using Behr paint. Some rooms using a coat of primer and then a coat of paint and some using 2 coats of the new Behr Premium Plus Ultra, which is paint and primer in one. I think Behr paint is very good and it is always highly rated by Consumer Reports. The price has come down as well. I was able to do two coats of paint in every room using only one gallon of paint (not the ceiling; I used ceiling paint there), so it wasn't too expensive

I just painted my dining room this past weekend with Behr Premium Plus. One coat looked good, and I questioned DH about doing another coat. He didn't think it needed it, but we had a lot of paint left over so I did another coat. We always seem to buy too much paint even though we measure the square footage, and read the label on the can. :confused3

We have had bad luck with Sherwin Williams fading after awhile. We moved furniture, and the wall behind it was much brighter than the rest of the room.

Just taking a break from painting. I have used Behr all-in-one and loved it. Today I am using Valspar all-in-one and will have to do a second coat. I am painting over a lighter color so that might be the reason. When I used Behr I was painting over a creamy white so only one coat needed. But if I had to choose I would go back to Behr.

Well, I do have tons of experience in painting interiors as I am never satisfied with a color for more than a few years. ;) First of all, no matter the paint, you always need to do two coats if you want to achieve the full depth of the color...yes, even with the primer/paint in one. Accept the fact that you need to do two coats and you will be much happier with the final product, even if you use a crappy paint. lol Whichever brand you go with, ALWAYS go for the top of the line one offered in that particular brand. It is absolutely worth it.

Behr paint (even their top of the line one) is HORRIBLE! It is extremely thin paint compared to others and just doesn't cover like some other brands.

Valspar is excellent paint as far as their top tier goes. It is thicker paint and has nice coverage.

I have not tried Benjamin Moore paint yet, but if you can afford it, I would go with it...but not their cheapest one. You get what you pay for.

Sherwin Williams Duration paint is amazing. It is also a paint/primer in one, but two coats is still the way to go no matter what. Duration paint goes on 7mils thick vs other premium brands which are I think 4mils thick...but, it does have a learning curve to it because it is so thick.

I personally would stay away from Glidden, Olympic, etc. I promise you, you get what you pay for with paint.

Stay away from Valspar with prime built in. I tryed to paint with it and the paint slide down the wall. It was as if it was watered down and it ran down the wall. I had washed and rinsed the wall before painting. I contacted Vaspar who told me that had problems with that product and to take it back to Lowes. the people in the paint dept said they had other people reporting the same problem!

I have not had any good luck with Behr primer and paint. I have used two different colors in the last few months and have had to use at least two costs. The paint I was going over kept showing through. After the first color I thought I would give it a second try in the next room, same result. So next time I will probably go with a different brand

If you want it wipeable, it needs to be semi-gloss. If you're painting a kids room, you need to use low or no VOC paint. We normally have the primer tinted to the color we're using to make sure we like the color. I agree with a previous poster; I don't believe there IS a true one coat paint. Well, you could use that rubbery stuff they use to paint basements. We've used Benjamin Moore in every room, per reccomendation from our decorator/stager.
The walls look amazing. Even my MIL, who requires several coats for a professional look, likes our paint.

I have had great luck with Behr Premium Plus. I just recently painted two walls in my son's room navy blue and expected to have to do 2-3 coats. I did one coat, took a look, and it truly didn't need a second coat. It is a very thick paint though. His two walls took 3/4 of a gallon (granted, they are pretty big walls, but still). I used it in my daughter's room too. She has two pink walls and two gray walls. I did have to do two coats of one of the colors (don't remember which one now), but that may have been because I was painting over a chalk board wall.

I'm using BEHR with the primer in to paint a wood bed. I am assuming a wall would take less paint, but it covered well in 2 coats. I am probably going to paint the wall next.

IMO it really depends on what color you are painting and what color you are painting over. I just finished painting a large room that originally had dark green on the bottom half and white on the top with red. I used the Behr Ultra Primer and Top coat and it still took 4 coats on that room. I painted the same red in the adjoining bathroom that was originally a medium tan and it only took 2 coats (one may have been enough but it didn't look even enough to me). I went through 5 gallons of paint for those 2 rooms.

My entire house is painted with Behr paints, it's been almost 7 years now and it all still looks great! I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

I am very interested in this thread. We are building a house and are wondering which paint to use. We did find a Benjamin Moore color we love for our master BR but haven't really looked at the quality of paints one brand vs another. Also, I didn't know Benjamin Moore was more expensive (the one we found was on a display at Ikea) Now I'm even more confused

Benjamin Moore Aura paint! We covered dark gold paint with one coat of a much lighter BM Aura paint (called Monroe Bisque) and it looks amazing. Listen, my husband does not enjoy spending money on paint and even he says the BM Aura paint is worth it. It goes on very easily and covers great and the fact that you only need one coat has him sold. I doubt we will ever use another brand of paint.

sherwin williams. if you wait for a special the price isn't terrible. We've covered dark green, pepto pink and god awful purlple with the stuff! It is nice and thick so it doesn't spatter either.

Sherwin Williams duration paint! For sure the way to go, we have painted every room in our house with it. One coat covers great, but we always do a 2nd coat:thumbsup2 very thick covers anything, and hasn't faded:banana:

I just painted my DD's room yesterday. I used Sherwin Williams HGTV paint and used one of their 30% coupons we got in our paper. The walls were the light tan contractor paint and I only needed one coat. I choose a very vibrant color (Slick Blue) in satin finish. Our walls are not flat, they have "orange peel" spray on them. So, I had to use a very thick roller, really push hard into the wall when painting and refill often. That maybe why it looks good with one coat (and why I was so happy I didn't need a second coat!) I'll post a pic later tonight if I have time.

I agree!!!! this paint is worth the money. I covered dark cranberry with a light yellow and only *needed* one coat, but did 2 because I bought the large can and didn't want to store the remaining paint....I also liked the fact that there was very little odor...
