I am having trouble downloading to Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 from my Canon digital Rebel.

It keeps saying that the device is busy or no connection.

I had this problem before and somehow worked through it. For the life of me I can't figure how today.

Can someone please help! Even suggestions on what the problem could be. (I have tried shutting down and using different ULB connection - problem keeps happening).

TIA

Have you tried a card reader? I always use one just to keep from wearing the battery down.

When you unplug the cable from your computer, do you hear the computer make a sound? (Make sure your sound is on when you try this). If so, wait about 10 seconds then try plugging the cable back into the PC and see if you hear a similar sound when it's plugged in.

If not, go into Device Manager (goto Start then Run and type in 'sysdm.cpl', without the quotes. When the dialog starts up, select the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button.) See if you have any yellow question mark icons. If so, and they seem to relate to your USB device, right-click on on the entry and uninstall. Then, restart your computer. It should find your drivers and reinstall. If not, then you'll need to reinstall your camera driver software.

Yes, I get the "da-dong" sound when I turn the camera on with the cable in. Plus the camera always says "busy" so I assume the camera/cord is working but something in the computer or Adobe is not "connecting".

I also checked out the Device Manager. There were no yellow question marks beside any of the devices/columns.

This is so frustrating because, like I said, I know I had this problem at least twice before but somehow was able to figure it out. I can't this time!

Any other suggestions on what it might be?
Thanks in advance!:)

I have the XTI myself, and have experienced this several times. Are downloading from a large GB card loaded with pics? If so, there is the answer to your problem. I have had the same problem with only a 1GB card but, fully loaded with pics. When you hook the camera to the computer and turn it on, it will recognize the camera, but it is still trying to get the photos from the card (ie: you will see the red light on the back of you camera contiually rapidly flashing as it is reading all the pics). So bottom line is you need to turn it on and give it plenty of time to read all the info from your card (red light quits) then hit the upload button. Hope this helps you:thumbsup2 Let me know if I can explain further.

P.S. I am using PSE 5.0

You can still use your large card loaded with pics, but wait until the red light stops flashing on the back of you camera, before uploading. It took me a little while to figure this one out, but that is most definately the problem you are having. Not a malfunction of any of your equipment. Just our impatience of wanting something right NOW! I'm guilty as charged.

Believe it or not, I have over 600 photos on the card. (I know - stupid!)

However, I have left it running as long as it takes and keep getting this error message. Do you think I should delete some of the photos? I have copies of at least half of them on a CD.

PS -I just bought a Canon 560 point and shoot for my parents for X-Mas and took the brand new cable out of that camera to see if the problem is the cable -its not. So I can completely rule that one out.

Have you tried watching the flashing red light on the back of the camera? That will let you know when it is ready. I had the same problem with 130 RAW photos.:thumbsup2

The red light definitely flashes and continues to flash even after I get the error message. Should I just leave everything on as is (even after the error message pops up) until the red light stops flashing?

You have to let the red light stop flashing, before hitting the Get/ Upload photos button.:thumbsup2 When the red light is flashing, the computer is trying to recognize all those 600 photos. Let the red light stop and I guarantee you will see that this is the problem.:cool1:

Oh - please, please, please, I hope this is the solution!:thumbsup2

I will try that right now and let you know. Wish me luck!:)

I think she is right. I built my last computer with all the latest and greatest to have evrything a click away. When I click on an action and nothing happens instantly, I am already getting frustrated. This is how I figured out the problem you are having. And I only have a 1GB card:lmao: I am thinking of getting a 4GB card and I can already see that I better get ready building me a new Faster and Greater computer.:rotfl2: I truly am sure this is your problem especially after you revealed that you are loading 600 photos.

I agree with ukcatfan.

I highly recommend getting a good high speed card reader, why put the were and tear on your camera, and camera bateries..

Yipppppeeee!!!

Well DisneyNutz was right!!! I waited until the red light stopped blinking. Then it just stopped. Nothing. No photos.

Well I thought I still had the problem, but decided to press "Retry" just in case. Again error message came on but red light kept flashing. Again, I let it keep going. Eventually it stopped and then I got the blessed "connecting to camera" message. Yeeeeahh!

So it worked!!! Thanks so much to everyone for all the suggestions and especially to DisneyNutz for solving my problem.

And, I reallly will look into a card reader. I know nothing about it, but I assume that this would work perfect in the parks to provide you with a "back up" photo download in case something fails on your memory card? Is that right?

Thanks again everyone! Love this forum!:)

I knew this was your problem just from reading your post.:thumbsup2 Glad this all worked out for you. As far as a card reader goes, I wouldn't invest in one, unless you just don't like hooking your camera to the computer and waiting. I don't know if it would read any faster or not, but will definately not save any lost photos. Glad to help:cool1:

That I have truly contributed to the photography board thread, but sadly it was a computer related issue:sad: I guess I am still a newbie at photography related issues:rotfl2:I can build you a computer though, does that count for anything.:confused3

a high speed card reader will read faster, as well as save wear on your camera and batteries, as far as cost goes, I got 2 of them at office depot, during a sale with rebate that yielded a final cost of $0.00

I have to agree with this. I never used to use a card reader. I saw it as just a pain more than anything so I never bothered to get one. I was also concerned with taking the memory card in and out of the camera so many times that I might bend a pin (CF cards) or something. Well, then I had to upload my pics to my OLD Dell laptop. This bad boy is a whopping P3 750Mhz ! Try connecting a 30D to that and all heck breaks loose. You may as well try to draw all of your photos. You'd get it done quicker. I went and bought a card reader. Not a terribly fast or top of the line one, and it works just fine even with my dinosaur laptop. Now I just keep it plugged into the desktop (much faster than the laptop! :) ) and use it all the time. It works like a charm and is PLENTY fast. No lapse like the OP is seeing at all.

I have used a card reader on my previous camera, but not currently using one. I did experience the same problem the op had. I will have to look into one for this camera.:thumbsup2 That's great you got such a deal on yours.:cool1:

This is a card reader. It connects to your computer via a USB cable.

They are inexpensive.

It is a simple matter of selecting the picture(s) you want to download, then click copy then go to the drive/folder you want to copy to and click paste.

The pictures will also download faster.
