By saying Florida was going to miss this storm, I mean central Fl. As of 1:00pCDT it was 20mi SSE of Gulf Shores AL. THAT IS WHAT WEATHER.COM SAID, That is The Weather Channel.

Pensacola, FL (Panhandle) reporting here...and we are DEFINITELY getting it. Wind is blowing so loud I can't hear the TV, and our power has gone on and off three times today! FYI - Anybody East of the storm, the weathers guys like to call these quadrents (very algebraic of them), is feeling this storm. Rain, flooding and even tornadoes are pretty common effects. So the whole state should be getting some by-product of Miss Arlene.

Keep your prayers focused on all the Pensacolians who still have FEMA blue roofs....we'll be busy this weekend volunterring to re-tarp houses and start collections ALL OVER AGAIN (insert nervous tick here).

OP - I actually wound up having to cancel our October 2004 vaca to WDW because of Ivan hitting us here. I REALLY hope your honeymoon doesn't fall through, but trust me chica, a re-scheduled trip to the world isn't so bad. We enjoyed it even more in March because we knew how lucky we were to have our house, and family, and enough $$$ to even go. This too shall pass...

Sorry to hear that, I will keep everyone in my prayers.

How did everyone in the Pensacola area make out?

Yes, it's an overall pattern change. Among the reasons is that the South Atlantic water temperatures have been much warmer than normal the last two years, leading to more tropical development than if the water is cooler than normal..
Yeah something was different about the upper level winds last year. I remember watching the weather channel during the late 90's and all these huge hurricanes (example Luis?) would get close to the east coast and then get deflected or curved right back out to sea. Last year the storms just meandered around abit - strange!

Sorry to say, but August and September are probably the worst months you could pick out of the hurricane season to plan an event around, all you can do is hope for the best, but reality is out there so worrying will not help. I had to evcuate 3 times last year and not looking forward to doing it again anytime soon. We just had the Florida sales tax holiday end this week for hurricane supplies and the stores were packed. They are selling power generators right off the truck and can not keep them in stock.

Arlene wasn't too bad. No big deal after Ivan.

You can't control the weather, why worry about it? If it is really bothering you, schedule a different kind of honeymoon, maybe a New England leaf thing because anywhere in FL or the Caribbean is a hurricane risk. Hawaii or mountains might work but there is a fly in every ointment. Could be an airline strike, a personal illness, a plague of rabid wolves :goodvibes

As for me, I have an Oct 1 trip planned. If there is a hurricane, I'll be in the parks (with no crowds) the day before and the day after. The day OF the hurricane, I'll be surfing in the hotel pool. :teeth:

Harambe here! I've decided not to worry about it until right before our August trip. Last year we went in between two hurricanes and had beautiful weather for our four days. I was really glad we could go and pour money into the Florida economy. I was really grateful to (and humbled by) those FL residents that still managed to smile even though their homes were ruined.

Stop worrying people. No one knows how bad the hurricane season is going to be. The reason they say it's going to be bad, or worse than last year, is to cover their butts in case it actually turns out that way. Imagine the uproar if they said it was going to be a light season and 4 or 5 big storms hit. Then the truth would be out that no one can predict the weather more than a week or so in advance, and even that's shaky.

I've grown up in Florida, and I've been through several hurricanes. All you can do is just be prepared. Plan your vacations and stop worrying. I live here and I'm not worried, so you shouldn't be worried when you're only going to be here for a week.

Well, to be fair, we have learned a lot over the last 20 years about the nature of climate and the influence of various climatalogical observations on the severity of the hurricane season. We do know that this year is more likely to be worse-than-average than better-than-average, at least in the tropical Atlantic.

I have to agree with Disney Gator. A hurricane will go where a hurricane will go. In August and September the entire East Coast, the southern West Coast and even Hawaii (although its a small target) is under the gun. If its that worrisome I might pick someplace like Toronto or Europe for a honeymoon.

Also...not that anyone wants to hear this but the big storms (hurricanes and blizzards) serve a purpose in keeping a balance in nature...they give you water to drink and keep the temperature extremes in check. So every cloud has a silver lining.... :rotfl:

That's true. We can have an idea of how many storms might form, but we still have no idea where they are going to go. In fact if the storm is a few days away and you are in the "projected path", it's pretty much a guarantee that you won't get hit because the storm will change direction.

I was doen in Orlando when Ivan came thru. Everyone where I live was calling me a fool for going there with the possibility of a Cat 5 Hurricane coming that way. I just kept saying that God knew I needed a vacation and He would protect us. Well, we went down and Ivan came thru where we live in Birmingham. We were safe and protected in Orlando, had no waits at any of the parks that we went too, and had the time of our lives. Now, we are getting ready to head down there again this Friday night. We know it is going to be alot more crowded than it was last September and we also know that there could be alot of rain. But we are looking forward to alot of firsts. We will take what we can get and enjoy the rest. As the Australians would say, No worries!

May God Bless Your Wedding and Upcoming Marriage!!!

We have gone in August several times. Last year we lucked out and were there in-between hurricanses 1 and 2. A friend at work was there for hurricane 2 and got stuck for 3 days because of cancelled flights. Three years ago we were there when a hurricane hovered off the coast of Florida for three days before moving into NC (Floyd I think). Hurricanes are definitely an issue August-September timeframe.
