Tropical Storm Watch 2007 (2) Hurricane Dean

oh bugger is all I have to say

looks like it will pass us at about 75 - 80 miles north, so we are on a Hurricane watch - we'll get 50 miles an hour winds and about 8 inches of rain we're thinking.

good luck to those in Martinique - they're on for a dead hit.

GUYS,

we r due to fly out on tuesday morning, staying in a rented villa , just asking 4 any advice , ie what to do if dean is heading ur way:scared1: :scared1:, would it be worth checking into a hotel??:grouphug:

We were in a villa just near the intersection of the 192 and I4 on the Highgrove development in 2004 when Hurricane Charley hit. Although it was scary in the build up (we were headed back to the villa and things came on earlier than predicted and we were still in the car when the radio was beeping and giving out tornado warnings :scared1: ) once we were in the villa I felt reasonably ok. We just stayed in the lounge watching the coverage on local6 TV - they sent a reporter into the path of the storm who got hit by flying debris which seemed a bit extreme!!! We played Disney Trivial pursuits and sat around all evening but at no point did I feel really unsafe, my theory was that if you are in the hurricane zone then building regs especially for commercially let properties would be pretty tough... No idea how much there is in this logic but it was comforting to me! However the next morning we were amazed how some places were really badly damaged and others unscaithed.

i certainly wouldn't let it put me off visiting Florida in hurricane season again.

All modern Florida houses have to be built to hurricane standards (by law), which means they are pretty safe structures. The outside areas may be more affected (pool screens, etc), but unless there is a lot of debris flying around (which you do need to pay attention to beforehand, ensuring all small items are safely stored away), there is usually nothing to worry about.

Latest map shows it now moving just south of Jamaica and hitting the yucatan Peninsular and then Mexico hard

Our family relatives are in Mexico on there honeymoon :sad2: :scared:

We have friends who left for their honeymoon on Tuesday so looks like they may have a bit of disruption :(

Yikes that is some change of path! Looking good for Texas but not for Mexico

Claire ;)
