As of 5 p.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Isidore is located near 19.0 north, 78.8 west or about 165 miles east of Grand Cayman island to the south of Cuba. Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph with gusts to 70 mph. Minimum central pressure was 29.50 inches (999 mb). The effects of Isidore have already been felt on the island of Jamaica, where nearly 5 inches of rain fell at the capital of Kingston and winds gusted to nearly 40 mph Tuesday night and Wednesday. Isidore is moving northwest away from Jamaica at about 9 mph. However, tropical storm warnings remain in effect for Jamaica and all of the Cayman Islands and a hurricane watch is in effect for western Cuba. At the very least, bands of heavy rain and strong wind gusts will continue over Jamaica and the Cayman Islands over the next 24 hours with the potential for flash-flooding. We believe Isidore will pass over or close to western Cuba Friday and be located in the southern Gulf of Mexico on Saturday. Conditions remain favorable for further development and Isidore could become a hurricane by Thursday morning. In fact, this storm has the potential to become a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico this weekend. Beyond that, all interests along the entire stretch of Gulf Coast from Brownsville, Texas to Key West, Florida need to monitor the progress of Isidore, and be aware that a land falling, powerful hurricane is a possibility.
