Tropical Depression may be forming next week

I know weather is unpredictable in Florida and I have watched ours for two weeks and know it changes nearly every hour. Now it will be hot the next few days but they are watching the Gulf of Mexico closely for the possible formation of a tropical depression for early next week with heavy rains. There is an article on The Weather Channel about it.

I think we are going to try to get everything we can in the next few days just in case. Those who have been through it before... what is it like and what is your advice? I know they are unlikely to close the parks but are tropical depressions mainly heavy rain or will we need to watch out for lightning and heavy winds?

We have rain ponchos and now I am thinking of carrying flip flops in the backpack in case of heavy rains.

We were there when a hurricane was just off the coast and brought heavy rain and storms but it wasn't close enough to close the parks. Even with the ponchos you WILL be soggier and wetter than with a regular rain storm should this happen because of the relentless heavy rain. I would think about what bag(s) you're carrying and perhaps get a waterproof one. Also consider your cell phones - putting them in a pocket is probably not enough. Those waterproof pouches made for swim parks are good - the kind where you can use your phone while it is still in the case so you don't have to take it out. Consider your touring plans and think about what you would try to see/do if the outdoor attractions shut down for storms. Fortunately it's unlikely this will happen - these storms can be hard to predict.

We arrive Saturday. I'm trying not to stress out about weather since I can't control it, but it's in my nature. I keep looking and thinking the worst. It wouldn't normally bother me so much, but we are bringing my 13 year old sister-in-law for her first trip. I put too much pressure on myself when introducing new people to Disney.

We'll have our ponchos ready and just hoping that any rain is manageable and drives out some crowds.

The flip flops is a great idea! We were there a couple of weeks ago and it poured for 2 hours while we were in MK. We rode the people mover over and over to kill time, and when we got off at one point the entire walkway was flooded, no way to avoid it. We were wearing sneakers that got totally soaked! Having shoes that can get wet will save you walking around in soggy shoes all day like we did! I also packed a small towel from the room in my bag which I was glad to have to dry off with. I hope it isn't bad and you have a wonderful trip!

I'm just keeping an eye on the forecast. We're leaving a very soggy and flooded Texas. This is DD's first time to fly, I was hoping it would be clear and sunny. Right now I'm just hoping our flights don't get cancelled on Monday. I can handle the rain, that's all we've dealt with the whole month of May. We have rain suits and I'll swing by Target in Orlando and get rain boots if need be.

Suggest folks follow any storm forecasts on the government's National Weather Service web site. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

The advantage of using this site is that they don't rely on scary speculation to lure people to click on their stuff. There's no sensationalizing at the NWS, unlike most TV sources.

Oh, and BTW I just looked and they say absolutely nothing about any tropical depression forming next week.

Thank you for the link. I try not to worry too much about these things but planning for the worst just in case. I know not to rely on the Weather Channel and that is why I liked up the local forecast and they were saying the same thing so I started thinking it ay be a real thing. I will be sure to watch the National Weather service website too.

This is from the National Hurricane Center:

1. A broad low pressure area is expected to form over the southern Gulf
of Mexico by early next week. Additional slow development of the
low could occur as it subsequently moves north-northeastward.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent
* Formation chance through 5 days...low...30 percent

It's June, it's florida, it's going to rain. Just looked at forecast models and it does show a low developing in the Tuesday timeframe, but not that impressive (tropical system wise). A lot of rain but seems to be north of the World (for now at least).

yes, I know we go in June every year. A few thunderstorms is one thing a tropical depression is another thing. I hope it turns out to be nothing but there is nothing I can do about it.

Good reminder to make sure we pack shoes other than running shoes. And lots of ponchos. Thanks for the warning.

Good advice! My friend who studied to be a meteorologist recommended always looking at noaa as well :)

Glad to see this thread. I'm a little nervous about the forecast. I'm bringing a family for their first time and I want it to be a great experience for them.
We are coming from soggy TX as well. Anyone have any great suggestions for enjoying the parks during rain and storms?

Right now the noaa.gov site doesn't show anything. I am in south Louisiana and they briefly mentioned it on the news, but nothing about it today. I wonder if it already dissipated?

A depression is just a bunch of rain lasting longer than the usual afternoon storm. I wouldn't worry about it too much, especially since they aren't mentioning it at all on NOAA.

We're doing July this year, so I'll be on the tropical storm watch too. We're driving, so I don't have to worry about delayed flights, but I am always concerned about possible flooding along i95. Always something! Here's hoping that those pesky tropical systems stay far out to sea this summer. Sending wishes for safe travels, and magical summer vacations.pixiedust:

I wouldn't worry about it. If it rains, it'll likely be a late afternoon thunder-shower, that doesn't last. Get some ponchos and enjoy your trip.

We'll be there too. In fact, we go every year and experience it every trip.

Now, we've never been there during a tropical storm. So, I have no experience with that. Let's hope for the best.

Don't worry, can't control it. Just be prepared.

I went in August last year when a Hurricane was off the coast.

It brought tons of rain to my WDW vacation (a downpour for 2-3 hours EVERY afternoon or evening), but with ponchos we still had an awesome time. It was actually kind of fun to make a mad-dash in the rain :).
Luckily the rain always came around a meal time so a lot of it was just waiting out the rain while eating.

Just be prepared with ponchos (bring them every day even if it doesn't seem like it will rain) .. shoes and clothes that dry easily and you'll be fine.
