does anyone else wish they could respond to reviews of resorts on tripadvisor? It amazes me how people staying at the same resort at the same time have such drastic differences in reviews...

No, I don't feel a need to respond. Everyone brings in their own experiences, tastes and expectations, so there will be many different opinions and perspectives.

It amazes me too, but I wouldn't respond to anyone's review because I had a different experience.

I often read and write reviews for TA. I am always interested in the differences in opinion, but I would not respond to someone else's review. Everyone is entitled to their thoughts. Lots of people love the Poly, but the last time I stayed there was such a letdown, I haven't been back. If you look on TA, you will probably find 100 great Poly reviews for each negative one, but that doesn't mean that my stay wasn't disappointing to me as much as it means that the Poly is usually on its game, but wasn't when we were there. The only times when I don't find TA helpful are when someone is reviewing something negatively to demonstrate what luxurious standards they have by applying them to someplace that is clearly a budget property or when someone loves everything so much that they seem to excuse bad food or poor housekeeping.

I'm not sure if this has changed or not, but I know you used to be able to message reviewers about their reviews. Not the same as responding, but if you want more info about a review (eg. a negative review someplace you're interested in that has mostly positives) at least you can message and see what the poster has to say.

I can't see a reason to debate a review. Unless it contains a straight-up factual error, such as claiming that the Grand Floridian has no pools, or saying that Pop Century has four table-service restaurants.

Reviews on sites like Trip Advisor (or the DISboards :)) represent that guest's perception of their stay, so it's hard to claim that their perception isn't valid. Everyone's tastes are different, everyone's tolerance for problems is different, and another guest's dislike for my favorite resort isn't something I take personally.

I always feel like I want to correct facutual errors, such as saying that all of these other guests just went straight in the FastPass line but no-one told us where to pay for it! Or commenting about a feature that a hotel wouldn't have (eg I was shocked that Pop Century didn't offer room service!)

Yeah, but those aren't factual errors. That's a guest who didn't research their trip.

I've been on TA for years and am a pretty high-ranking reviewer. While I've never commented on a review, I did just receive a PM from an angry person who was upset because they felt I bashed a tourist attraction in their city. I honestly wanted to rip them a new one, because as other posters here have said, I'm entitled to my opinion AND the majority of those reviewing actually posted similar experiences, but in the ended I decided against an argument and ignored them. It's just not worth it, and when I go on TA I go for GOOD and BAD reviews--I like to make sure I feel comfortable with what I'm paying for and getting into. But I honestly do welcome those who PM me with questions that they're otherwise intimidated to ask on the forums there.

Yes but by perpetuating the myth that FastPass is paid for and other inaccuracies it does hinder other people planning.

I don't mind people having different opinions to me but i do hate reading incorrect factual information on trip advisor and there is a lot.

I agree. I'm okay with a negative review on TA but the inaccurate information drives me nuts. Unfortunately, there isn't a good way to address that on TA. If I've stayed at someplace and know there is a factual error in other reviews, I'll write my own review and include the correct info, e.g. "resort guests can schedule fastpasses 60 days in advance and the fastpass service is FREE for all visitors to WDW. Guest staying offsite can schedule FP 30 days before their park day.". That way the right info is there for anyone who bothers to read both positive and negative reviews.

Everyone is different, wants different things, likes different things, tolerates different things to many different degrees, has different travel experiences before they get to a place, has different reasons for traveling to a place; people have different expectations about service--valet, concierge, front desk; people respond differently to people they meet in the elevators or in the halls or at the pools or at the restaurants--I could go on and on--all of these things may or may not come in to play when someone decides to write a review. I find that most reviews are at either end of the spectrum--someone either really liked or had a real reason to dislike a place. The middle-of-the-road types tend not to take the time to write a review. I wouldn't respond to someone's review--wouldn't be worth my time to get into an argument with someone I don't even know over something that could have had so many contributing factors making up that experience.
