Trip to the Colorado Rockies: budget trip ideas

I posted this in another forum and someone pointed me to you all, I hope you can help me....

I am dying to one day go back to the Rockies - I worked at a camp in Colorado when I was in HS and fell in love it. I want to take my kids there but I am now 38 so it has been some 20 years since being there. Any suggestions on where to stay (especially places that would be good with young kids - ages 7, 5, and 2) that isn't a budget killer? I worked in Buena Vista CO but am willing to go anywhere that is in the heart of the Rockies.
