We just returned from a 3 day AKL and 4 day Disney Wonder cruise that we used our DVC points for.

We were disappointed that the AKL villas are not actually available for DVC members yet and the accommodations were not what were expected. We had a two bedroom "villa" that essentially was a one bedroom suite and a Studio suite opened with a connecting door. The biggest problem is the Studio only has ONE bed. The other "bed" is a sleep sofa, which simply are too uncomfortable, especially for my 6' 3" 220 lb+ 16 year old son. My daughter had back surgery in 2006, so the sofa bed was out of the question for her as well. What bothers me is that I was really specific when I made the reservation about how many actual beds there would be, and I was assured one room would have two double beds and the other a queen. After much time on the phone with housekeeping, we managed to get an inflatable mattress that we put on top of the sleep sofa for my younger son. Our older son drove in from Atlanta to spend the three park days with us, and he slept on the sofa in the living room area, but didn't bother to open the sleeper part. I don't understand why they don't have sleeper beds similar to the ones on the cruise ships, which are really great.

We also had a problem when we first checked in, too. I had been told the rooms are generally ready around 3:30. When we checked in at 3:00 pm, they told us the room would be ready by 4:00 "guaranteed". Well, that was meaningless. We came back at 4:00 (we'd been up and traveling since 3 am and I really needed a quick nap) and were then told 4:30. We asked for the manager, mostly because I was annoyed by being told "guaranteed" earlier and wanted to find out just what that actually meant. She went to check and I stood there and cooled my heels another 25 minutes. She finally came back and said the "final check" of the room had been done and we could go up (by now it was 5:00 pm). Then the bed issue mentioned above became our next speed bump to get by. The manager was nice and accommodated us as best she could, but I believe 5:00 pm is an absurd check in time. On Sunday I called to see if we could have "late checkout" before it was time for the bus to the Wonder, and was told the DVC rooms had a "no late checkout" policy because they needed to prepare the room for the next guest. What a joke! Does it really take 8 hours to clean and prep a room? Either they need more housekeepers or ones that can work more efficiently. They rooms weren't particularly spotless. And our grocery order was not in the room, as I had been lead to believe it would be. I had to call down and wait an hour for that to be brought up, too. The explanation was that they aren't sure which room would be ours until we took possession of the room, yet when I asked if we could have a different room when ours wasn't available, they said we could only have the rooms assigned to us. Their right hand doesn't seem to know what their left hand is doing.

I'm not sure if the lousy treatment was because we're DVC members or what, but it was the first time we've used our DVC points at the DW and I wasn't too thrilled.

Our home property is Saratoga Springs. We were going to take a look around but didn't get a chance. I've been told by others that the place is very bland and theme-less. From what I saw from the bus, it wasn't impressive at all.

It will be very hard to get DH to go back there anytime soon.

If I'd known about the ultra late room checking time and the lack of actual beds, I'd have chosen a different property to use my points at.

The disorganization and lack of real concern on the part of the staff seemed uncharacteristic of our normal Disney experiences. Again, I don't know if it is a DVC issue or just a lowering of standards on the part of Disney.

um, wow- yeah- did you book a dedicated 2br and get a lock off? Seems that's the normal layout for all the studios (bed-sofa combo with the exception of Old Key West where you got 2 beds)

(do they have dedicated 2br's in jambo)

As to the other issues- sorry to hear that it didn't go as expected, but I'm sure the more knowledgeable posters on here can respond in more detail sooooo popcorn::

Sorry you had a less than magical experience.

Just some info, so you won't be disappointed another time by some of the same problems:
1) They not going to deliver your groceries until after you check in, ever. As the CM told you, there's always a chance they might have to move your to a different room until the minute you check in. It's the same reason you can't get gift baskets delivered before check-in.

2) As far as I know, all of the studios at all DVCs have a bed and a sofa-bed, so if you get a room combination that includes a studio, that's what you'll be getting. Sorry if you were guaranteed something different when you called.

3) SSR is our home resort and we just stayed there - it was really wonderful. Our visit there is perfect and we thought the resort and the theming were beautiful.

A "dedicated" two bedroom is where you'll find two actual beds, a "two bedroom" is a studio/one bedroom attached. I believe this is throughout the DVC resorts. You'd have to request a dedicated to have the two queens in the second bedroom.

It is also policy throughout DVC (and the II timeshare we used to own) that there is no late check out, check out is when it is and can't be changed.

The 5:00 pm room ready is surprising and I've never encountered this before, sorry you had this problem. I've never been in my room later than the stated 4:00 pm. This is the guaranteed time, also for all DVC resorts, although many many times have our rooms been ready much earlier in the day, but we don't count on that since 4 p.m. is the stated time.

From what I've been reading, groceries are held with bell services and not in your room when you arrive - unless ordered through Disney's grocery order forms - someone please post if I'm incorrect.

So sorry you didn't have your expectations met, most of what you posted is (or should have been) explained though. Hope your next go round is much better

Did you purchase sight unseen?:confused3

I don't believe AKV has any dedicated units and all the DVC studios on property have the queen/sleeper combo except the studios at OKW.

The beds in a 2 bedroom lockoff should have been a King Size, a Queen size and a Full Size sleeper. You should have had a sleeper chair also at AKV.

Is it just me or have there been several unhappy AKV trips lately?:confused3

Doesn't Beach Club also have some dedicated 2 BRS, that are not lock-offs?

I appreciate the feedback.

Site unseen for SSR -- yes, we bought based on the promotional literature and that our sales person basically said it was irrelvant as to which property we purchased as our Home property.

From all of the 360 virtual tours, it never appears that a two bedroom villa is just a one bedroom plus a studio. I'd rather have had a standard room or even one with bunk beds than sleep sofas or sleep chairs.

DH didn't want to take the time to see the AKL model villa. A person at the lodge gave us the impression the new villas they are building will be superior to what they have in Jambo house currently.

I don't want to knock the lodge too much. It is a stunningly decorated building and everything else about it was great.

I do understand about the grocery delivery, too. They just shouldn't say it will be one way and it is actually another, or give false expectations.

You got me curious so I just took a look at some of the 360-degree tours. Most of them do show the 2BR lockoff (with a queen bed and a full-size sleeper sofa in the second bedroom) rather than the dedicated 2BR with two queen beds. The AKV tour shows the new Kidani villas rather than the Jambo House villas, but even though Kidani will have both lockoffs and dedicated 2BRs, the "tour" shows a lockoff with a queen bed and sleeper sofa. The SSR tour does show two queen beds in the second bedroom but in the text description next to the photos they state that the second bedroom contains

Two queen-size beds or one queen-size bed and one double-size sleeper sofa.

Also I'm baffled that someone would tell you that "one room would have two double beds and the other a queen" because none of the DVC resorts are configured that way. The dedicated 2BRs have a king in the master bedroom and two queens in the second bedroom.

ETA: The 2BR lockoffs at OKW are also set up that way (king in the master, two queens in the studio portion) because all of the studios at OKW have two queen beds rather than a queen bed and full-size sleeper sofa.

Thanks Lisa! I was going to post that SSR also had 2 bed Ded w/2 Queens, because we stayed in 1 last year.

Jambo does not have any dedicated 2 beds, but will Kidani have them?

sorry you hit some speed bumps but it really sounds like most of your frustrations was from the lack of communication between different hotel staff/grocery people. I also can confirm that groceries arent delivered until you're in your room. And I also agree that 5pm is way too late!

I would not judge this post as the usual unhappy. Sorry to say this OP was not as well informed on what to expect. Not flaming the post but some of the things that upset them are things that are the normal for our stays.

Only one bed, sleeper sofa for other (they are being replaced but not all as of yet) unless you book the 2 bed rooms.

The room lay outs.

Not getting room until 4 or after.

No late check out.

Having things delivered to the room.

All learning curve things. Granted all things that should be told when one purchases DVC but sadly are not. I learned more from this board then from anything else. In fact we purchased BCV site unseen with out any tours just from what we learned here.

Learning curve, maybe, but all that information is readily available in all the DVC literature. I read that stuff cover to cover when we first joined. THe number and size of beds was known to me right away, but then I also took the tour. We first toured OKW but didn't purchase until after BWV started selling. We still purchased OKW though, and it was mostly because we wanted to be guaranteed the two queen beds in the second bedroom. ALL the studios/second bedrooms at OKW have queen beds, so maybe that is where the OP should stay in the future.

Another way to save on points and get two beds is two studios. There seems to be a big difference in the sofa-beds. I just got back from stays at the following: BWV, VWL and VB. BWV was comfortable, VWL was not comfortable at all, VB had two beds....

I hate the 500PM checkin as well. It seems like if you get to the resort early, you get the rooms at checkin. If you get there around noon it can take longer and even up to 530PM.

It seems to me that the 5PM check in is directly related to how many cleaning people they have. Does anyone know what the checkin is at regular Disney Hotels?

The 5pm thing sucks yah especially after being up since 3am. As my dh who is a P.Eng loves to say "Poor planning on your part does not make an emergency on mine":duck::duck:

Sorry you had a rought time OP. However you may want to further research your future trips so they do not turn out like the one you just had.:teacher:

Ok I have to say I am worried about owning DVC now....most things I read is nothing but negative reviews..We go on "our first time home" trip in October at SSR....I'm going to go with positive thoughts and just tell myself that everything will be great.

I'm just a little worried now.I know you have to check things out for yourself and yous should not worry about what others say..just a little nervous thats all.

It's 3:00pm. When we went to AKL in January 2006 we went to check in at 3:00 and our room was not ready. however. The woman at the desk told me that it is not guaranteed at 3:00 though. I had never heard that before until it happened to us. She said they are guaranteed by 5:00. Luckily, it took until about 3:30.

Please don't worry about your first visit home....DVC is wonderful!! I know what you mean by reading some of these posts sometimes folks may make it sound bad. We all have to remember in this vast world there are two types of people when it comes to adversity. When dealt a lemon there are folks who turn it into lemonade and then there are just lemon suckers who only want to complain to the world.

I prefer to be a lemonade drinker and enjoy every vacation I take with my DVC ownership. Does that mean problems don't ever occur...no, but I deal with them and move onto the fun part of my vacation. I will not let things build up to the point I feel I had a terrible trip. I hope that makes you feel better....

The bigman has learned from reading this board for a while that you rarely hear a ton of postive stories about any resort here. If everything goes smooth, then people figure "nobody cares". They want info on the things that go wrong so that it doesn't hapen to them.

Go with a open mind and enjoy the visit....
