Ok, where was I? Oh yeah, the first afternoon/evening.
By now it was about 4:30 pm, so we headed out and trekked through DTD. We stopped at Napolini for a quick piece of pizza (forgot to take pics, sorry). It was ok. Not great; not horrible - but ok.
We window shopped through DTD and headed right for DL. Went in with no plan other than to do whatever struck our fancy. Wandered over to the Haunted Mansion and walked right on. Then went to Pirates and walked right on! We were really surprised given the crowds that were there. Did some shopping and browsing and some more walking around - went by Indiana Jones (neither of us have ever ridden this) but the standby wait was over an hour and we were too excited to be there to stop for that long. We would have gotten a fast pass, but we didn't want to be in the park that late our first night.
Oh, and another thing - we couldn't believe the crowds already staking out places to sit to watch Fantasmic at 7:00 - it was wild! We wanted to double back and try to do HM and Pirates again (favorites of the Birthday Girl) but we got caught up in the ropes and loops and were herded the other way. At that, we decided to head back to get some more substantial food and head to bed.
Trekked back through DTD again to the hotel (have I mentioned yet how annoying I was beginning to find this "forced march" through DTD?) This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip for my Mom and I'm so glad that I chose the DL hotel - but the next time I go with the rest of my family I'm going to stay off property near the park gates - much better than to have to make that long treacherous walk every night - and I can't even imagine trying to do it with tired and cranky kids. . .but I digress. Now, before I get flamed for that, that was my ONLY big complaint of the whole trip - everything else was truly magical and I would not trade a minute of it - even trudging back and forth - I just wanted to point out that if you haven't stayed at the DL Hotel and don't know the layout of everything, you have quite the trek to get to the gates of the parks.
So we walked back and got a quick bite at the hotel (nachos for me and chicken strips for Mom). We also had a couple of adult beverages (whee!). We then headed up to the room and were unpacking when we heard a loud noise and looked out the window - you got it - we could see Wishes perfectly! We stood there in awe and watched the whole show. What a great way to end the first day! We went to bed and set the alarm for o'dark-thirty (we had breakfast reservations for 7am).
Day two coming soon!
