Just wondering if we should get the trip insurancw. It is an extra $300 on top of the balance for the trip. Is the insurance something rhat most people carry? What does it cover and is it something that we can add just before we go or does it have to be paid 30 days prior to arrival? Thanks

For me personally it depends on the cost of the trip...Our first two trips we stayed at AoA and then POR and I chose to not get insurance. Our next trip is at CR and the cost is twice as much as our previous trips so I did purchase insurance just in case of a last minute emergency. I could not swallow losing out on that much money if something were to happen!

Adding disney's travel insurance to a package reservation has to be done before your final payment...so that's 30 days before arrival. Once you've paid in full, you can't add their insurance. It covers nonrefundable portions of your trip when you have trip delay, trip cancellation, trip interruption. It's through Travelex. There are details on disneyworld.com, including a link to even more details at Travelex. https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/faq/rooms-packages/travel-insurance-benefits/

I never travel without it but I don't it from disney. I have some coverage with my existing insurance and it's easy to add on for a lower cost to get more comprehensive coverage for a trip. I also know there is some coverage available from some credit cards (amex mainly but may not be limited to that) so you might want to inquire there as well.

You really need to reach each policy but there is a lot of things you could claim from travel delays, fees if you didnt' get a 100% refund if you had to cancel (for certain reasons), medical coverage. If something serious happens generally there is some type of coverage and help but again read the policies and decide if you want to have that coverage. You just never know what's going to happen and it's nice to have coverage if something does.

I met a couple families one trip (back when I didnt' get it). One was on a dream florida vacation for 2 months (yes 2 months at disney), they were from canada. They got food poisoning and dehydrated and had to leave after 2 weeks because they couldn't afford to stay after the 1 night in the hospital health care costs they just got. They even said if they had insurance we could afford to stay. Same trip, someone else that I met who knew this family as well said it doens't matter about international. Someone they knew that was older fell and had some injuries from the fall. They had health coverage and the costs they incurred is somethign they may never pay off because their coverage wasn't the same when traveling.

You just don't know what's going to happen when your traveling.

If we are using a common carrier (flying,) or will be in an area where the main road can be shut down, we get insurance. If we have to depend on someone else, we get insurance. I didnt get it for this trip. Disney's cancellation policy is very forgiving and we are driving the 7 hours.

We only got the insurance when we went with our kids and their families at the Poly. I wanted each of the families to have the insurance should a snafu occur considering we were all coming in at 3 different times on different planes from different locations. It was for my peace of mind as I would rather be safe than sorry.

We would absolutely NEVER, EVER travel without it.
Although, that said, I don't count within my home country as travel and don't generally insure for that, but then, most things are covered anyway.

What does the insurance cover?

What does the insurance cover?
I purchased Allianz (this or through disney is what my agent recommended when I said I wanted insurance this time) which was $75ish per adult (so total was $158) and covers our whole family of 5. We have the classic plan which covers baggage and baggage delay, change fees, missed connection, emergency medical transport, emergency medical and dental, trip cancellation at $1500 per person (this is the only reason I purchased it!), travel delay, trip interruption, and frequent flyer miles redeposit fee. They also have 24 hour hotline assistance. I know Disney has a good cancellation policy if you cancel up until two days before but if it is an expensive trip the insurance is worth it to me! I am a surgical nurse and actually once had a patient having his appendix removed the day before he and his family were supposed to leave for Disney World! You just never know!!

What does the insurance cover?
Our insurance costs about the same as taking an extra person. if not more. But, we are travelling from UK, with a person with incurable Leukaemia. So, it covers, many millions of dollars health care, just in case. It covers cancellation, lost luggage, lost / stolen money, missed flights, delayed flights, lost connections, repatriation, failure of travel company, cessation of trading of company, expenses if we were to be trapped there for a reason not our fault. Almost everything I think.

I dont' for many trips if the cost is lower and I'm not leaving the country since my credit card I use has some insurance for things like lost baggage and failure of a travel company.

Things like medical I don't worry about unless I'm leaving the US since my insurance would cover me if I'm still in the states.
