Trip insurance

I don't know, I've never bought it and I've never needed it. I consider it wasted money.

Are you buying it as part of a package? We've booked a couple of DL packages through Alaska Airlines and have purchased the trip insurance as part of the package. It was super cheap (around the $30-40 you mentioned), and you could cancel for any reason up to 4 hours before departure and get a full refund (well, maybe minus a $100 fee). It was peace of mind for us when we're spending a lot of money and booking the trip several months in advance. :confused3

I was never a fan of trip insurance until a couple of years ago when my Sister got extremely ill before one of her family trips. Her trip would have been non-refundable and because of her insurance she was only out a couple of hundred total vs a couple of thousand. Really I think it depends on how much of your trip is refundable and how much is not. I purchased insurance for this trip because you never know what is going to happen when you book seven months out. Now I am happy because we almost had to cancel (my DH is having a 5 week layoff and I didn't think we could go - at the last minute we are still going but the relief of not being out all the money was nice).

I always buy the trip insurance. I feel it is a low price to give me piece of mind. By having the insurance I know that we are covered if anything does happen and we are not able to go.

If you have a bunch of nonrefundable aspects to your trip, then get the insurance.

But if you've booked with Southwest, have a hotel that can be cancelled, say, for a one night fee, have a cancelable rental car, and that sort of thing, then no, don't get it. Would be a waste, unless you got it ONLY on the hotel if the premium is less than a day's deposit, and I'm not sure if you can do that.

Good advice! :thumbsup2 Now health insurance when travelling out of your own country is mandatory! My daughter ended up in hospital in Thailand! and my daughters-boyfriends father ended up in hospital in Cancun! both could have cost them thousands of dollars! not to mention, as soon as they hear you have insurance, you get the absolute best care.

We have never bought trip insurance before but are considering it. It is about $40 per person for us. Do you guys think it is worth it?

I don't know how many are in your group or what the total cost of your tirp is so I can't say whether it's worth it or not, but... if the total cost of the trip insurance gives you peace of mind, that's the point of it after all.

You're in WA - are you driving down? What time of year are you going (is the Siskyou going to possibly slow you down and delay your arrival?)?

If you're flying - is your ticket transferable? What's the fee? Or better yet, is it refundable at all?

Is this part of a package (I'm assuming) - would your hotel be refundable? Many times they take the first nights fee and refund you the rest - so how much per night would you be paying IF they have this policy.

I'm pretty sure your park tickets are non-refundable, but can you save them for a later date (when is the expiry)?

As far as sickness/health - that would be the biggest thing. We had the flu the week before we left and I was worried. Luckily we were better before we left.

I never take the insurance for our Disney AAA packages. If I'm in the hospital then I'm not thinking about the thousands I've lost, if I'm not in the hospital, I'm going - even if I'm stuck in the hotel room. :)

Out of country trips (other than up to Canada since I'm a citizen and am covered), I get insurance not just for peace of mind but it's practical.

Thank you, I am going to look into all of those things! :thumbsup2
