Not sure where to post this, so sorry if it's in the wrong place.

I'm wondering about getting trip insurance. Do you buy trip insurance for a trip to DW? I get it when we go on trips outside the country or on cruises, but I've never gotten it for an in-country trip.

What do you do? Has anyone had to use their trip insurance?

Be sure though you read fine print and entire policy to see if gives you the coverage you desire, many times what you think is covered is not. :goodvibes :goodvibes Danny

In the past when driving we have not purchased the insurance. This year my mother is traveling with us and we are flying so I did purchase it in case she had a health problem and couldn't go or if there was a problem with our flights or luggage since we will be using the Magical Express and someone else will be transporting my luggage.

I don't normally get it but this year we're going to be there in August, That's prime hurricane season isn't it? Would it be more worthwhile to get it for an August trip?

It depends on how much of the trip is refundable.

If you can't lose the money that you'd be out without insurance, then get it. If you can lose it, don't bother.

Just remember that you never know when you'll get a call that someone in your family has had a heart attack or whatever. It happens to people all the time. Don't bank on good health!

September is the big month for hurricanes.

I believe Disney has a hurricane policy. I can't remember the exact length of time, but if there is a hurricane warning at Disney or where you are coming from in X number of days, Disney will refund your money.

We never used to, but this past year, my dad was ill with cancer and we didn't know how things were going to go for us. But dad passed away before our trip was scheduled so we thought it wasn't necessary but we had it just in case. Then while we were on our trip, our DD had a gran mal seizure on a bus going to AK, and Disney had us transported to the hospital. The travel insurance paid everything that our primary insurance did not cover, including DDs perscription and travel fees back from the hospital, since we didn't have a rental car. So, needless to say, I will always carry travel insurance now when we travel further than 2 hours from home.

Consumer Reports advises against trip insurance.

That said, you need to compare what the policy covers, how much it costs, and how much money you would be out if various situations arose.

Airlines are pretty good about letting passengers reschedule in severe weather situations (even non-refundable fares).

Note to the poster getting trip insurance in part because Magical Express (i.e. 'someone else') will be handling their luggage: AIRLINES misdirect over three million pieces of luggage per year, and outright lose more than 250,000 of those. In contrast, Magical Express has reportedly lost... none. In fact, once or twice, DME has taken responsibility for providing the Guest with replacement items when the airline couldn't find their luggage.

I don't think it's worth it for a Disney package because of Disney's cancellation policy.

Say you don't get the insurance and someone gets sick a week before you leave and you can't go. Disney will charge a $100 cancellation fee and the rest of my money would be refunded.

Now say I had bought the insurance (which is $66.95 per adult) and cancelled- it'd be out $134.00. So in that instance, I'd be out MORE money for buying the insurance.

Say you cancel the day before-- the most you'd lose is $200. I'd rather just risk the $34 and not buy insurance.

I normally don't get insurance, but this trip I did. For only $133, it seems worth it. And I believe it also covers accidents WHILE on vacation...someone breaks an arm, etc. What if someone gets sick the day OF the trip, or the day before? It's just peace of mind.

I can understand your concern; however, let me share a quick story with you. My son as asthma and it is necessary to travel with a nebulizer. Well to no fault of Disney I left it on the Magicla Express bus and did not realize this until we reached the airport. One call to Disney and the machine magically appeared at the terminal. "Magical Express" searched the bus and sent a represenative to meet me at the check-in gate. :yay: I was assured if I needed to board the airplane prior to them getting there they would send the machine, overnight at no cost to me!!

I don't get it. I went to Mexico last year during hurricane season. I wanted the insurace incase the weather wasn't good. Well, my TA advised me that TI usually doesn't cover hurricanes. As long as a flight is going to your destination and the hotel is open, your trip is still on hurricane or no hurricane. Weather does not affect the trip. Only injury, and I think death to a family member does.

We have gotten it and always will. To us, the $65 per adult is well worth our peace of mind. Last February, I had a nasty fall in the Mexico pavilion off the steps and sprained my left foot and right forefoot. While my insurance paid for 80% of it, that meant several hundred bucks that I had to pay out of pocket. The travel insurance picked up the remaining 20% so I was only out the $100 co-pay that my medical insurance charges for ER visits (regardless of location). Of course, had we not used the travel insurance we'd be out $130 but in the whole scheme of things it's not that much $.
