I'm not worried about insuring our airplane tickets....Southwest will let us cancel and credit them for later use, so that's not worth insuring. The rental car I can cancel 24 hours ahead, or else the cost is only $50 if I don't cancel, so again, not worth insuring. We'll have AP vouchers, so again, if trip doesn't happen, just use them later.

But...the biggest expense that can't be reimbursed if our trip doesn't happen is the house/condo. I'm wondering if it's possible to get trip insurance on a privately owned rental house/condo? What would it cover? If I got there and the house was a disaster? Or worse, if I got there and it didn't exist! The full payment has to be made 2 months before we arrive....what if something happens and we can't go suddenly?

I've never done trip insurance, but then I've also never planned an expensive trip like this so far ahead of time!

Any words of wisdom, recommendations, links to learn more would be much appreciated.

We use insuremytrip.com It will direct you to different insurance companies and compare coverage and rates. I don't know if it will cover anything to do with the house not being what you expected but it will cover if you have to cancel in case of an emergency. I do think you need to have some kind of rental agreement with the owner.

We also use insuremytrip.com. We travel from the northeast in February so we always worry about a huge snowstorm shutting down airports and causing us to miss our trip. Like you, we don't really care about the cost of the airline tickets because it is minimal to change those and use them at a later date, but we always end up covering those under the trip insurance too because the coverage is really good. They pay for delayed luggage and lost luggage, and I have had my luggage delayed several times on other trips and wished I had this insurance. We paid $80 total for trip insurance for our trip.
