Trip Insurance Question

DFIL has terminal cancer. We are planning a trip for September, but if something happens to him and we can't go, we'd want to reschedule it for later but not cancel it. Do I need trip insurance for this?

I would get it. A few years ago, we had booked a trip and then found out my mom had cancer. Her surgery and chemo were scheduled during our trip so we cancelled. We did not have trip insurance. We did get most of our money back - except for the deposit and one night stay. But we had to jump through hoops - we had to send letters from her physicians, etc. and it was such a pain during a really awful time. Disney was so nice about it and that made it easier. The airlines were another story. They were awful.

We get trip insurance since that time.

When I booked today I was asked if I wanted the insurance, I turned it down. The CM told me that we can book up to right before the trip with only a loss of the $200 deposit. If I cancel before I finish paying it off I get back a full refund, and if I cancel before a date which was a week or so before we loose something like $50. It just doesn't seem worth it to pay the money for the insurance. I'd check with a CM on the cancellation policy and see if it's worth it to skip the insurance.

I think you can add it up to the day you make your final payment. I think I would get in your case, not because of cancellation, but in case something happens while you are there and you need to cut your vacation short.
