Many of you may remember that I posted a thread and a trip report about our quarentine trip on the Jan 19th Wonder. Our family had two people (DH and DD) quarantined for 2 1/2 days due to the stomach virus.

We had purchased the insurance through Disney (Access America). When we got home, we called the number Disney provided and Access America sent us the claim forms within about 5 days. We filled them in and mailed them in early February (as best I can remember). Several posters asked me to report out on the results.

Yesterday, I received a check from Access America for the full amount I had claimed. It was based on missing 2 1/2 days of the trip. I prorated the price of the cruise into the price per day, and multiplied that by 2.5.

I am very satisfied with the service and turn around time. As far as I'm concerned, that check goes straight into a fund for our next cruise on DCL!!!

Lisa...that is wonderful news. We have used Access America for our upcoming Eastern DCL cruise in May though I took it out directly through Access America at their website....was only $37 pp as opposed to DCL price of $99 pp.

My parents used Access America for a two week land/sea China Trip last year.....3 days before departing my mom had a stroke (mild but doctor obviously would not let her travel anywhere).

Within about 5 weeks they had a check for the entire trip amount. They really seem to be a good company. Thanks for sharing your results.

What a price difference MJ do you have that web address?

www.accessamerica.com

The price is based on your age and cost of the trip per person. We took out the plan called TRAVEL WITH EASE COMPREHENSIVE.

CORRECTION....I JUST CHECKED THE PRICING CHART AND MADE A MISTAKE IN MY ABOVE POST.

Hubby and I were $42 pp and the teens were $37 pp. Sorry.

So glad to hear the outcome. I need to buy insurance for my cruise next February, and will now lean toward access america after hearing how well they took care of you.

Hope next year's cruise is healthier!

FYI - Access America is also available through AAA at the same rates as the web site - it is the AAA insurance company (at least here in Indiana), same coverage as Disney you just pay them directly

I purchased this insurance through AAA and my TA said it was great coverage, but I always wondered if it really was when you had to use it!

I just purchased the Access america plan listed above, and it does cover pre existing conditions IF purchased within 14 days of placing the deposit of your trip.

Trip insurance is very confusing, I spent a lot of time researching it, but finally decided to go with access america after hearing positive things from people who have had to make a claim.

There are several good companies out there, and at least I feel better buying it direct this time as it is much cheaper $87 for 2 people versus $198 from the cruise lines (both RCCL and DCL).

Also, when I purchased the trip insurance when I booked my DCL trip, I didn't receive any information of what was covered until I got my documents even though I had booked my trip with the insurance a year before.

Lisa,
No, I didn't know you guys were quarantined, but very happy to see the insurance company came through.

I have a question. I already told my TA I wanted the insurance for our 4/04 trip at $99 p/p Can I cancel that and get this instead? I do belong to AAA but did not book through them. Can I call them and get the insurance through them or just go through the website and when should I purchase it?
Thanks so much It I can save money I'm going to do it:D

I am confused. I had already made the initial deposit on the trip so, does this mean if I purchase trip insurance now that I won't be covered if I get sick before the trip starts. Or is this related to other preexisting conditions like cancer, etc... Thanks for helping me out!

OurDogCisco;

If you or a family member get sick, it will be covered if it is not something that you/they have sought medical treatment for within a certain period of time (depends on the insurance company) before you bought the insurance.

I wanted to make sure it covered pre-extisting conditions because I have a father who just went through some heart problems, and want to make sure if it happens again right before or during my trip, the insurance will cover it. I also have a grandfather who has been ill in a nursing home for a few years, and if he were to pass away, I would like to be able to cancel my trip to attend the funeral. Both of those issues could be considered a pre-existing condition, and not covered if I didn't buy the insurance within 14 days of placing my deposit.

I hope this helps explain it as best I understand it. I'm not in the insurance business, but did try to do quite a bit of research after forking over $350 for trip insurance for my family of 5 last time!

Pre-existing means existing before or at the time you purchase the insurance. The clock on new conditions begins the day you buy the insurance. So, if you had a heart attack last year before buying the insurance, your heart condition is pre-existing. If you have a heart attack tomorrow, having already bought the insurance, then you are covered if you must delay or cancel your trip.

Your TA/DCL is really the best person to answer the first part of your question. If you can cancel it and get a refund, you can get insurance from any source you please. You should purchase it at very minimum before your final payment is due, but most times you'll get a better deal if you purchase it when you make your 1st payment, and you'll potentially get better coverage.

Whatever you do, make sure you read all the fine print and know what you're buying, just as you would for your car or home insurance.
