trip insurance for non-US citizens?

We're planning on going on a cruise with my mom who lives in Japan. She is a Japanese citizen, and I'm a Japanese citizen with US Green Card. My husband and children are US citizens. I was planning on purchasing 3rd party trip insurance, but it looks like most places only cover travelers who live in the US or Canada (the citizenship could be non-US/Canada, just residency).

Has anyone traveled with a non-US resident with trip coverage before? Will we be able to purchase trip insurance for all of us if most of us are US residents? Disney trip insurance is expensive, but I'm assuming theirs would cover all of us regardless of our residency...

TIA!

Each company sets its policies as to who they will cover. If they say they only cover US citizens, then the non-US citizens in your party would not be covered by that policy. I believe when you use the comparison sites, you specific citizenship for them to search the policies for you.

You might benefit from calling one of the customer service representatives at the comparison site and asking questions. They are very helpful.

Your mom should be able to buy travel insurance from Japan though right? Because I'm assuming that the Disney insurance wouldn't cover her air travel from Japan, any travel she's doing before or after the cruise, etc. Particularly medical if she's staying for a few days before or after.

We always purchase our travel insurance from Australia, and I would never travel to the US without a very high medical coverage.

I live in Germany, my boyfriend lives in the US (yes, not the best setup, but we manage). I am getting a German trip insurance for me, he gets a travel insurance from the US. When they ask for the trip cost to be insured I just divide the total trip cost for when we travel together by two and add on whatever my flight to the US costs for my insurance (assuming we are travelling in the US). This is what all the travel insurances said on what to do if you don't get a group policy. I always check the terms if it says that if you cancel because someone in your party cannot travel, everyone in the party needs to be on the same policy and I never found any clause like that. I don't see any reason why you would need to be on the same policy. So, your mother should be fine with getting insurance in Japan.

However, one cruise we did get the DCL travel insurance and they were able to cover me. My TA commented on how this was unusual, but she double checked and I got a policy with my German address, so the insurance company knew. My other travel and my medical was covered otherwise. As the PP said, I would never travel to the US without making sure that I had adequate medical coverage. But I am sure you know about this being from outside the US yourself! :goodvibes

My husband isn't a U.S. citizen (has a green card) and we get insurance as a family through World Nomads. Check them out.
