Trip Insurance - Coverage when Driving?

My apologies if I missed this in a previous thread.

I had passed on trip insurance but with our cruise approaching (less than two weeks away) and after reading advice on this board, I will be purchasing coverage. We will be driving in the day before the cruise departs and I have a couple of questions related to this.

1. Do I indicate the departure date as the day the cruise starts or the day I leave home and begin the drive?

2. The terms and conditions I have read seem to indicate that if you're in an accident while driving in for the cruise which causes you to miss the cruise, you're covered. I don't see mention, however, of plain old car troubles, i.e., you have a breakdown which delays you and causes you to miss the cruise. Anyone know if this would be covered?

i just purchased my trip insurance thru insuremytrip.com and it states to list the day you're departing from home to the day your heading back and i was quite surprised to see my rental car was covered during my stay.
