Our DS (6) has mild CP and we just found out that he needs to have his hamstrings and Achilles tendons lengthened. The surgery is Sept 4 and we were told he would have casts on both legs for about a month. We have a DL trip scheduled Oct 4. I wanted to switch it to Jan but my DH wants to try to keep it scheduled. He thinks after this surgery DS deserves a trip. We are going for carsland. DS has been waiting patiently to go. We are DL and WDW vets and we have gone with him having braces but this is a new ball game for us. We will definitely consult his surgeon before going, but wanted to see if anyone had experience with this surgery. I know about the GAC but there is the chance he will still have casts on his legs. Will there be rides he can't rides because of the casts. He is not very tall about 42".

Is this even doable month after this surgery?

I had my achilles tendon lengthen on January 27 and had to wear a removable cast for 8 weeks. I would not have done a trip a month after. Even after getting out of the cast, my leg would not hold up all day.

Now granted I am 46 years old, so healing will be slower for me than your son. I would switch the trip. It will be easier on all of y'all.

As a teenager who had this surgery done a few years ago, I say to wait until your son has recovered. I don't know the extent of your son's CP, but I can tell you that going through recovery from that surgery was not fun, and I highly doubt he'll be up for a WDW trip. I cannot even imagine tackling Disney a month post-op! Besides, your son will have something to look forward to: seeing Mickey!

(Mind you, I had my hips rotated, too, so that might make a difference. :confused3)

I agree...your DS definitely would need a Disney trip after an orthopedic surgery! I always scheduled another Disney trip while we were in the hospital recovering from my son's surgeries...

But, you may want to reschedule...

He still may be uncomfortable several weeks after hamstring lengthening. And, his casts will have his legs straight out....which may make it difficult on some rides, even if he was feeling up to it.

Thanks for the replays. I'm going to talk to my DH about moving it to the first week of Jan.

We're scheduling a December trip, and just decided that my DD needs this surgery as well. To be on the safe side I decided to schedule the surgery for January. Her last trip to Disney was spent entirely in the hospital down there, I want to be sure she can enjoy this one!
Good luck with the surgery and your trip, whenever you go!
