You know you're good when you can trim kitty's back claws while she's sleeping. :thumbsup2
:woohoo:
;)

I've always cut my cats claws, front claws, awake and all. Why do you cut back claws?

Dang IM not the only one who can do that? my boz sleeps right through. I trim his back claws cause they get really long and snag my bed.

Because she's stopped taking care of them & they are really long. The vet even trimmed the back ones last time we were there.

Why trim back claws???? Cuz those are the jumping claws! You should see my desk chair! My Flippy is like a parrot on my desk chair, she lays right on the top. When she jumps down SCRATCH! The top of my chair looks TORE UP! We now clip ALL of her nails. Flippy is our only indoor cat. The other 3 are cats that have adopted US. They are outdoor 22 hours out of each day but we've had them front declawed and fixed. We won't clip their rear claws cus that is their only defense out there.

As soon as our tax return comes we will be getting Flippy fixed and front paw declawed as well.

But we'll still clip her rear nails.

I need a new chair.

I've only trimmed the front claws. Now I do it while Kitty's awake as she's onto me and wakes up anyways. Some days she's fine with it. Other days, I'm lucky I still have a hand.

I need a new cardboard scratcher. Even with her front laws trimmed, that thing looks like shredded cole slaw now.

You are LUCKY! I have four kitties and only ONE will allow us to clip her claws without a struggle. We do not clip the back claws since the front is enough torture for them in one day.

Best advice ever received was: You don't need to clip them all at the same time. Quit when kitty starts to get annoyed. ;)

And that is excellent advice except I'm usually so frightened that I just put it off until the fronts need clipped again. It's a vicious cycle! :rotfl:

::yes:: Best advice I ever received, too. Some days I get in 2 or 3 of one paw. Some days, I can do a whole paw, except for that top claw. I rarely can do both paws at once. Since she's usually sitting next to me on the couch when I do it, it's no biggie to need to get them all done at once. I'll get the rest the next nite. No sense in starting Kitty World War 3. :headache:

Well, you can adapt this following procedure for trimming a cats claws.

Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.
Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw away soggy pill.

Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

Retrieve cat from neighbors shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Apply Whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw t-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

Ring fire department to retrieve the flipping cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap.

Tie the little buggers front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed.

Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 liters of water down throat to wash pill down.

Consume remainder of Scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

Arrange for SPCA to collect mutant cat from Hades, and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

It would actually be easier to just take the cat into the shower with you and feed it the pill. ;)

I have two kitties who will let me clip their nails, bathe them, and dress them. The youngest one ( 1 1/2 old ) walks on a leash and routinely goes to Petco.

The third, "Ninja Cat" needs to be sedated to go the vet for a nail trimming. The carrier has to be taken apart because she bends herself into alarming shapes, and dropped into empty space, after which we quickly slam pieces of the carrier back together.

It takes one vet and three tech's ( two of which are wearing shoulder length leather gloves) to hold down and clip said cat's nails.

She only weighs about 10 lbs. :rotfl2:

:lmao:
Upon the last visit, the vet informed me that our cat is known among the backroom techs for her fiestiness. You can hear her throughout the office screaming. I can only imagine what happens back there. :rotfl: Poor thing, she's fine with me. She just hates the vets office.

I too have a dressable cat. Then again He must be dressed to go outside. So cold here. Loves to eat snow.

You have outdoor cats that are declawed?? How do you expect them to defend themselves?????
