Tried jogging, OUCH!

So I've been walking pretty briskly everyday for about a month and a half now and it is getting fairly easy. I was out walking yesterday and decided to give jogging a try. (I keep thinking about that half marathon and how fast you need to keep up.) I thought OK, I'm gonna jog. I went down one street and OUCH! So much impact on my feet and my body just in general. Like jarring central! Just didn't feel good at all. I think lung and heart wise I could do it, but my body?!? Today my feet even hurt and I have somewhat decent shoes I think - New Balance, although they are aerobic shoes. Any thoughts on this?

I can't jog, it hurts my old knees. Jogging/running can be pretty tough on the chest wall, too.

Try with the better shoes and see if it stills hurts.

Shoes make a HUGE difference. If you are wearing cross-training shoes, you really aren't doing yourself any favors! A nice, lighter weight CUSHIONED running shoe may make the experience much more comfortable for you. But, like any *new* exercise, I'm sure your body surprised by the change - starting a running/jogging program is much easier on the joints if done on a treadmill. If you don't have one available to you, try a walk/run combo where you walk for a few minutes, then add 1 or 2 minutes of running and build up slowly so your body has time to adjust to the impact of running.

Also, make sure you make the time to stretch thouroughly after running - especially those hamstrings, hips and lower back which can get extremely tight on those of us who aren't *natural* runners!
