That's us!

I'm not doing trick-or-treat this year. We've had a couple of close calls with kids who can't respect the fact that my dogs are hyper-nuts with all the trick-or-treating going on and want to pet them anyway - some who've even tried to go around the fence in back; I've had too many kids dis getting 2 mini candy bars and a piece of hard candy as "they don't give nothin' there"; and I have to watch as the neighbors on the estate (yes, ESTATE!) down the street bring their entire church group around on a hayride thru' our neighborhood, while they themselves don't turn on their own lights.

So I am a total scrooge and opt out. I am sorry to all of the cute kids from our own neighborhood who are missing out. I am not sorry to the hayriders or the kids who take cars into our neighborhood; not because of money, but because we are easy to access and our neighborhoods all interconnect for miles and miles and miles of trick or treating.

I remember fondly when I lived in an itsy neighborhood that wasn't connected to anything and didn't have sidewalks. The only kids we got were our own neighborhood kids, the ones we all saw playing every day - a max of 30 every year. We gave out one or two full sized candy bars and everyone else did something similar; the kids didn't trick or treat very far or very long and had full bags. . .It was sooooooo easy!

I've noticed less people handing out candy each year. I took my DD4 trick or treating tonight and it was only every 4th or 5th house that had their lights on. When I was a kid, it was every 20th house that wasn't on. It's sad how time have changed. :sad2: But if kids aren't going to respect you that come to your door, then you were right to back out.

I have not participated in halloween for yrs. In fact I did not even hear one come to the arpartments we live in at all. Its fine not to give out candy. You dont have to give a reason. Jo

We still give out candy, but we do get so many old/rude kids, and most people around us have shut down shop.

We do have rules. Cute little kids, polite kids, people dressed up, all these get 2+ full size candy bars.

Kids that do not say trick or treat or thank you, kids over a certain age not dressed up, and rude people get a small piece of candy. And they have to sing for it.

Cute little kids who are polite with nice parents and wearing costumes who ask to take their picture with me and our house will get 5 big chocolate bars.

Sadly, we are often left with far more big candy bars than little pieces of candy.

I can't imagine giving different candy to different kids! Gee, you aren't cute enough...have a rock. I find that as rude as the behaviors the kids are being accused of. I've never heard of a child asking to have their photo taken at a home or with a home owner, either.

I'm not talking about little kids, I should have made that clearer. My apologies. It's just more or less if they are obviously in their late teens or older and rude, more or less. And a halloween sized candy or a couple small candies isn't exactly a rock. It's still about the same most people give out.

And we sort of go all out for halloween. Being asked for my photo was a new one for me this year, but still very nice! Much nicer than a couple un-costumed 15+ boys saying 'Give me two big candy bars', nothing else, then proceeding to try grab more from my bowl.

Yes well add me to the Scrooge McDuck group.

I am Australian and live in Australia (only visiting USA every 2-3 yrs esp Disney). Halloween, Fall Festival etc are not a part of our culture.

Until the grocery stores, chocolate producers, and producers of nasty "spooky" stuff decided to get in on it. Not our culture at all.

Just as I do not expect Americans to understand Vegemite, Kimberley cold beer, and the delights of cricket or Aussie Rules football.

However some families seem to think if you put a wig on a kid & send it out with a large bag, it will come back full of chocolate. No - my house is not dressed up for Halloween - your arrogant teenagers are not fun and I really object to you smashing eggs near my house after I decline to give you chocolate.

Hopefully one day I will be in the USA with DD6 at Halloween and then we can go to a Disney ToT - but it will probably just be around Xmas for that party instead.

Rant over

Well, I feel like I have to defend those families who take their kids out trick or treating, but don't give out candy. I know a lot of families who go to the big festivals put on by schools and churches, or go trick or treat at the mall, where it's well-lighted and climate-controlled. I'm sure their houses are dark while they're away. As for the hayriders, well, I think that sounds like a lot of fun. I'd love to see some kids having a great time on the hayride, although I think whoever invited them should be hosting them at a party at their house. When I was growing up we lived in a huge subdivision. We had tons of kids from other neighborhoods come over. Their parents would load them up in the station wagon and just drop them off for 2-3 hours. You could easily make a 25-lb haul. Most of the neighbors were agreeable to this. When they ran out of candy, that was the end of the night for them.

We decorate our yard in a big way and my wife is always in costume when handing out candy, so it's not uncommon for request for a photo op.

Well, you learn something new every day. I'd never ask. We haven't ever had anyone here ask either, and my boys are pretty creative.:rotfl:

I guess I'm just not a hater. I am not even close to judging any trick or treaters. I can not even imagine buying different candy and setting a list of rules. I really hope this post is a joke! It's Trick or Treat, not negotiations for world peace. No rules necessary.

I don't know what I would do if we had rude people coming to our house to ToT...

We had an exceptionally polite group of kids last night. Even the few older ones without costumes later (the last one was just a bit after 8) all had 'thank-yous' and 'Happy Halloweens' for DH and I.
We actually had to encourage kids to take more candy from the bowl!

Our cat almost got out, but that was our fault for underestimating a sick cat's curiosity in the events.

Well said, I totally agree. Some people are a drag.

I'm with the drag group. I'm happy to hand out candy to neighborhood kids, but I think people going all over large areas to collect as much candy as possible is greedy. And, yes (I know this is an unpopular opinion with some on the Dis), I don't think teenagers should be trick or treating. This is a child's activity. JMHO

We're way out in the country and only had the neighborhood kids, but my parents subdivision had an onslaught of kids. Everything from hayrides to 4 wheelers pulling trailers of kids (one of them made three trips through the neighborhood (apparently, they thought people were too stupid to remember them). At one point, the police actually showed up with blue lights due to the traffic congestion. The neighborhood is small, and there is NO WAY all those people came from that neighborhood (and almost as many were teenagers as were kids). Sorry, I just think that's greed, plain and simple. My mother said that she was done after this year.

This is a 'Trick' right??? :confused3

We give out candy to all kids big or small, even the ones who forget to say the magic words...........:goodvibes our little ones used to forget too, we understand.

Candy is cheap, I just don't see all the concern over this. Get repeat visitors, whatever, 1 piece of candy each, no big deal. Yeah, some people are lame, but then there are tons of cute nice kids and that is worth a few teenagers without costumes.

We usually give out 2 pieces of candy per child, simply because we can never predict how many kids we will get. It's usually a chocolate and a gummy type snack. Although now that I know there arn't many kids I think I might give out a few more treats next time :)

I love Halloween so i make sure to have teh full size candy bars on hand and have my light on early. i don't care whocomes to my door, i never comment on the lack of costume if that happens nor do i worry about eh size of the group. I had a few more kids than usual last night and was happy because in the past few years our neighborhood has lost most of teh little ones.

I did not have one rude kid, teen or little one. We had some unique ways of transporting the kids though. A hay wagon drawn by a tractor, a Madri Gras type wagon all lit up and a rolling cemetery with lights strung. It was a lot of fun!

If you come to my door I am going to give you candy. :)

I don't have a qualification process.

I always hated when Charlie Brown got a rock when everyone else got treats! :sad2:
