Trick or Treat...I can't have nuts...

Okay. I know the neighbor kid is alergic to nuts. I bought a package of Hershey miniatures, among other candies to hand out to kids. So, the little girl who is alergic to nuts comes to the door and says she is alergic... My DH gives her what we give all the kids...except makes sure not to give the Mr. Goodbar... the only thing we are giving that WE think has nuts...???

Should we have done otherwise? Tell her the candy was in a bowl with other candy that contains nuts? Or, do the parents of nut alergic kids look through the candy to be sure

just give whatever you have. the parents will go through the candy and find anything that is safe for her. It will be very little. Most mass produced candy/hersheys etc.... are peanut contaminated and cannot be eaten by peanut allergic kids.

If the child is truly allergic, she should not have been out trick or treating alone..

Give out whatever you bought. It is the responsibility of those of us with allergy kids to check the packages, not yours. Thank you for even thinking of it!

My wife got diss'ed by a two year old tonight... She offered him a package of animal crackers or pretzels and he said "Hmmmm, no thanks!", turned around and walked away. The kid's mom looked mortified. My wife came back from the door laughing!

my DS (peanut allergic) came home with a ton of candy he can't eat. we don't expect everyone to cater to the allergy. he exchanges it at home for candy he can eat or money.

Thanks for your concern!! My DS2 with a peanut allergy got candy he cant eat so he traded with his sister who can have it. I go through both bags and keep the PB stuff in a cabinet over the fridge where he cant get it.
It is my job to make sure he is safe, I dont expect you to have to worry about it!

Yup, I agree with the others. Those of us with allergic kids will do the checking! I bought a bag of dum dums (one of the only candies my son can eat) and did a one for one trade with him.

I agree, not for you to worry about. The parents will check at home. There are some kids in my neighborhood who have peanut allergies & I always try to get a peanut free candy & another choice. Tonight I gave out Smarties & Reeses. I ask the kids which one they want. The little boy next door was so happy that I had something he can eat! I will say that none of the ToT's said they are allergic, I just know a few from living here.

My youngest has a nut allergy too and my favorite treat he got tonight: a package of UTZ pretzals and a mini bag of popcorn. I'm already planning to give those out next year! So many of the variety packs of candy bars have nuts in them (including the ones we gave out) and I don't like having to be so vigilant.

Another thing that's difficult is that the snack size candy doesn't have in ingredients list on the wrapper. Anyone know if Whoppers or Kit-Kat bars are nut free? As a PP said, I also bought some Dum-Dums as a nut free option.

I kept a small bowl of candy that did not come in contact with any candy with nuts (or that was made in a factory with nuts), just in case, but no one asked and I felt funny offering.

I buy what I buy and if someone is allergic, doesn't like it or whatever, they can choose to do what they want with it or just say "no thank you". I'm not catering to every child that might come to my door.

I had smarties and lollipops for those who are allergic to nuts since I couldn't say if any of the other candy was made in a factory that also processes nuts or not.
