Trick-Or-Treat & Birthday Sweets! Oct 2013 PTR *NEW* 11/4 TR Link Posted!

Hey, really enjoying your non-Disney trip report! It's nice to see beyond the usual "here's us in front of the castle" shots.

Looks like the place you're staying at is really nice. I'd like to get down there again someday, maybe in a few years. I am concerned it would be too hot for us for a summer vacation. Maybe a spring trip someday. Google says it's about a 12 hour drive for us - so definitely not a weekend jaunt!

I'm sure the Dixie Stampede stuff will be fun. We really enjoyed it down in Myrtle Beach, and would've gone to see it a second time if they hadn't closed it and replaced it with a pirates show. (Which actually I think I liked better.)

Thanks for the info and the link! :thumbsup2

You're so very welcome! I hope you get to check it out. :goodvibes

Glad you are enjoying it! You know how much my DH loves taking pictures, so weeding through them for the very best while still keeping the TN part brief might be hard. ::yes::

The weather was great when we went...highs in the upper 60's to lower 70's. :thumbsup2 Summer would probably be pretty hot. And it was about 11.5 hours for us on our way home with just a few stops. Definitely needs more than a weekend after all that time in the car!

Monday April 22nd

Monday morning, we slept in until the blissful hour of 8 am! It was pretty fantastic, since that is considered late by our standards. lol We didn't want to waste time though, so we got dressed and took breakfast to go since we had a long-ish drive to Great Smoky Mountains National Park to visit Cade's Cove. I am definitely not a mountain person, because all the ups and downs and curves had me feeling pretty sick to my stomach by the time we made it to the Park.

xewdzRY.jpg

So for those who don't know what Cade's Cove is, I'll try to give a brief explanation, because I didn't know going in either. It's an area in the National Park surrounded by mountains. There is an 11 mile paved one-way loop that goes around in a full circle, and along the way there are different points of interest. Most are historic buildings like churches, homes and cabins from the 1800's, and there are a few different stops with walking trails that you can hike further into the park. Obviously with Paxton along, we skipped all of those! There are also 2 two-way roads that stretch across the loop, so if for some reason you need to cut your tour short, you can cut across to the end of the loop. Or if you get to the end and want to go back and see it, you can cut across back to the beginning. So DH had printed up a little map with the different points of interest and also some information on what each one had to offer so we would know where we wanted to stop.

As soon as we started on the loop, before we even came to any real stops, there was a huge field with a bunch of people out there with cameras on tripods. We slowed down to look and saw a bunch of deer and turkeys just milling about! DH wanted to get out and go see them, but I didn't want DS to scare the animals away from all the people trying to photograph them. So I stayed in the truck with him while DH took his tripod out to take some photos. He said he could tell those are professionals, because their tripods cost more than our camera!

Once he had taken some photos, we continued on. We missed the first point of interest, a home of someone, so we stopped at the next one instead which was the Primitive Baptist Church. I'm a little surprised that DH didn't get a picture of the outside of the building, but I can't seem to find one? We went inside first, but didn't take many pictures yet because there were quite a few other people inside. So I took DS out to walk the loop around the cemetery.

This poor family had 3 boys die in infancy, two at birth and one at 9 months old.

Once the other groups cleared out, we went back inside for some photos and DS got to play the piano!

O4ZpzMx.jpg

He insisted on wearing the hood, even though it was a little too snug!

vPPQRNt.jpg

There were two more churches as the next two points of interest, so we decided to only stop at one of them. One seemed a little further back from the main loop, so we stuck to the one close by, the Missionary Baptist Church formed in 1839. I really loved this one! Both churches had a notebook you could sign, and I was really sad to see how many people wrote all over the structure instead! There was writing on the walls, the pulpits, and even the stand that the notebook was on. And not just writing, some people carved their names into it as well.

See how I'm still smiling? That's because I didn't realize DS was opening that cabinet! lol There were just more Bibles in there, and he left them unharmed once I realized what he was doing and closed it back up.

The next two stops were hiking trails of 10-12 miles each, so we settled for just stopping on the shoulder so DH could get out and photograph the mountains.

When he got back in the car, there was another deer right next to the road!

Our next stop was intended to be the Elijah Oliver House. It was a home, barn, smokehouse, and a corn crib (whatever that is) that sounded like an area DS could run around. We walked a ways and even crossed a stream to get to the barn.

He found some sticks! Woo hoo!

7y6izUQ.jpg

After seeing the barn, we kept walking. And walking. And walking. Still didn't see the house anywhere near in sight, so we turned around. DH ran ahead to try to get better pictures of the stream while I followed at DS's pace. We spotted another deer!

The next and unfortunately final stop for us was the Cable Mill Historic Area & Visitor Center. And for those of you like me who like to know these things, the only restrooms on the loop are here! We started off at the visitor center and checked out their gift shop.

nJokMSa.jpg

In the gift shop, DH and I each got a Cade's Cove T-shirt, and we also got a Great Smoky Mountains National Park magnet and postcard for DS.

lBCMPLZ.jpg

Well that sign looks reassuring...

RXJoUxT.jpg

No idea what this actually is, but DS was very excited to proclaim that it was a "seat!"

DS LOVED this wheel at the mill!

I took DS inside the mill, and he was thrilled to look down and see all of the gears turning and wheels spinning to turn the mill. The man working even let him come up and see the corn going in so he could see how it got grounded down to cornmeal and let him touch some of the cornmeal when it came out. He definitely loved that part!

Smokehouse. Someone had seen a snake here just a few minutes before we went to look! Another photographer was nice enough to warn us. Thankfully I didn't see any or I would have lost my mind!

By the time we finished up there, it was nearly noon and it would take us awhile to get back to Pigeon Forge from where we were, so we decided to pass over the rest of the stops and head out of the park. I would have loved to stay and see them all, but you really just need more time and it's difficult with a toddler.

It was nearly 1 pm by the time we made it to our lunch choice for the day, a recommendation from my uncle, the Bullfish Grill.

eej2G7N.jpg

DS was getting cranky (he usually goes down for his nap at 1), so we had to break out the iPad with some Mickey Mouse Clubhouse to keep him quiet during lunch. DH had a Tennessee Jack Grill sandwich, that was a grilled chicken sandwich with BBQ sauce, melted pepperjack cheese and bacon, with fries. I had the grilled filet medallion which was a 4 oz filet that came with steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes. DS got a grilled cheese on Texas toast that he ate about half of with some applesauce. This was a really great meal, but a little pricey, which is why we ended up there for lunch instead of dinner.

We got back to the resort at 2 pm, and I snapped some pictures from the car.

fjXGTcF.jpg

Z6hCTQQ.jpg

DS went down for a nap right away and slept until 4. We had discovered our ice machine was not working, so someone came up to fix it once DS was awake. He was there a little longer than we had anticipated, so we didn't leave for our dinner show until 5:20 pm, a little later than we had planned. Which dinner show?

HoqOThK.jpg

DH had seen this show as a kid, but I never had. He got me all freaked out when he told me there were NO UTENSILS!! So I had come prepared with a set of plastic utensils in my bag, and do you know what? I didn't even use them!

We stopped by the stables to see some of the horses, but they were all showing us their butts.

knsml8a.jpg

xpH5zGV.jpg

When we went inside, we still got to see some of the pre-show entertainment. We went up to the balcony to watch so we would be closer to the theater entrance when it opened.

BkX2bIE.jpg

These guys were great! They were covering all kinds of songs, including some Justin Bieber!

WQPqdlt.jpg

We went into the theater not too long after and found our seats. We were on the side of the South (of course!) all the way to the right and on the second row from the bottom, but no one sat in that row so it was almost like being first row anyway! DH said he remembers the place settings being a lot closer together when he went, like you were shoulder to shoulder with the person next to you. But I guess since we were there at a slower time, everyone had a little more room. Which worked for us, because since DS was free he didn't technically have a "seat" but there was more than enough room for him between us. Good thing because I don't know how we would have kept him on our laps the whole time!

PKpkiBa.jpg

Only picture of the show, as they don't allow photography

Before the show started, they came around with flags for $3, so we bought one for DS. Probably the best purchase of the whole trip! He LOVED waving that thing around during the whole show. In fact, he pretty much loved every single part of it! He was clapping, stomping, and flag waving almost the entire time. He also ate really well, which surprised me because I thought with all the activity he might not want to.

For the meal, you start off with a cup of vegetable soup (delicious!) and a biscuit, then you get a whole small rotisserie chicken, a half of a baked potato, a biscuit, a slice of pork roast, and corn on the cob. I gave DS some of my dark meat from my chicken and he ate some of that plus my whole piece of pork roast and some of DH's, and some of each of our biscuits. I was impressed! And it was all REALLY good. The only thing I didn't really like besides the pork was the corn on the cob, but that's just because I hate biting into it. So DH finished mine. Dessert was a delicious flaky apple pastry.

DS's favorite parts of the show were some of the competition aspects, like the chicken chase and the pig races. There were some slower parts where he started to get a little bored, but then he would get drawn back in by something else that interested him. Totally worth the money! And after all the competition, the South won!!

After the show was over, we stopped to talk to a couple of the performers. I tried to get DS to take a picture with one, but he was wiggling.

FeCOhfo.jpg

We stopped in the gift shop on the way out, but didn't want to buy anything. We had pre-purchased a souvenir boot cup when we picked up our tickets, so we did have to stop at the counter just to pick it up. Another great purchase, as he loves that boot cup! And he'll sometimes pick it up and say, "There's a snake in my boot!"

Showing off his flag

It was a little later than his usual bedtime when we got back, so he got a quick bath and was put right to bed. When I was covering him with his blanket, he turned over and said, "Mama, I like the horsey show." Honestly, I think he enjoyed Dixie Stampede more than anything else we did that week! I was so tempted to take him back, but it's just too expensive for that. I was so happy he loved it, and we all three had a great time!

UP NEXT: Horseback riding & Corn Fritters!

FYI: A corn crib is just the bin where you store the cow/pig corn for the off-season so you can use it to feed your animals in the winter. Knowledge from my youth as a farm-hand. (NOT!)

Looks like Dixie Stampede meal is the same everywhere. We thought it was pretty good back when we did it. DW even bought some packages of the soup mix to make at home. I think we might still have one left. I generally don't like corn on the cob anywhere out. I am a huge corn-snob though as I like my corn fresh and cooked just right.

They sat us on the North side (also DUH!). (Maybe it was 3-4 years ago?) We also have that boot-cup in our cabinet at home! DD won't drink out of it though. Maybe she thinks drinking out of a shoe is unsanitary. :lmao:

What a great day - touring, eating, nap time, and the Dixie Stampede. Now if I ever go back to the Smokies I am going to know exactly where to go.

Sounds like you picked a great week between spring break and summer. Smart move!

Ah, thank you. This city girl had no idea. In addition to mountain living, I'm not suited for country living either. :lmao:

The soup was really good, but DH was not a fan so we didn't get any mix. Did it come out close to the same when you made it at home? Corn, especially on the cob, is DH's favorite "vegetable" (I put it in quotes because I constantly tease him that it's not even really a veggie!), so he really loved getting a bit extra.

:lmao: DS hasn't drank out of his yet either. I might have to break it out for dinner tonight and see if he actually will...he might think it's just a toy because he played with it in the room all week long!

It was great! Definitely plan some time for Cade's Cove, especially if you like that kind of stuff. I'm a history nerd at heart, so I love visiting those kinds of old buildings and trying to imagine what it might have been like when it was actually used!

We did end up with a great week in most ways. Especially sounds like we were lucky with the Cove because since that loop is a 1 way you can only go as fast as the person in front of you, and it sounds like it gets pretty crowded in the summer and weekends in the fall. The only bad part was that we had planned to spend a lot more time by the pool and in the indoor waterpark, but since the resort was not busy during the week, the water park didn't open until 10 am every day, and the outdoor stuff like the lazy river wasn't even open at all until Friday!

I am definitely not a mountain person, because all the ups and downs and curves had me feeling pretty sick to my stomach by the time we made it to the Park.
DW always hates that drive... she is the same way. But it is usually worth it once you're there.

He said he could tell those are professionals, because their tripods cost more than our camera!

Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes? :rolleyes1

No, thank you. Just saw a sign about some snakes. I'm not sitting on any stone grouping that looks like a good hiding place for a snake.

DH had seen this show as a kid, but I never had. He got me all freaked out when he told me there were NO UTENSILS!! So I had come prepared with a set of plastic utensils in my bag, and do you know what? I didn't even use them!
Come on!!! Live a little!!! I can't believe you took your own utensils. :lmao::rotfl2:

At least you didn't use them though. :thumbsup2

Why is there an excamation point after "Justin Bieber?" Don't tell me you like him too. :rolleyes1 :lmao:

Didn't they play any Hanson? :confused3

I'm glad that you all (especially Paxton) enjoyed dinner and the show. Makes the cost well worthwhile if he is having that much fun!

Now you're getting into one of the few things that I consider to be my field of expertise. :lmao:

Back in the day, corn was harvested still on the ear. They built corn cribs, which were basically a wooden structure like a barn, but with wider gaps between each wooden slat to let air flow through. In the later years of storing ear corn (up to around the 50's or so) they started building them as a cylinder shaped structre with wire walls and a metal cone shaped roof.

Nowadays, just about all the corn is shelled with the combine, so you're just storing the kernels in either a steel grain bin or a concrete silo. I know around here, there are a few people who raise beef cattle that still use a corn crib and pick whole ears to grind for feed. The cob doesn't have much nutritional value, but it is good roughage.

I actually have an old wooden corn crib at home, but it has solid walls on the inside of the wooden slats to keep weather out and I use it to park a truck and some farm equipment in now.

DW always hates that drive... she is the same way. But it is usually worth it once you're there.

Definitely worth it, but oh God it was just awful getting there!

:scared1:

He also said he felt like an amateur because he was wearing a bright red t-shirt while all the others were basically wearing camo to blend in and not scare the animals. :rotfl:

That's a shame. Just no respect... :sad2:

I was really upset to see this. So disrespectful to the history of that place! No one cares that John <3's Nancy! or that Amanda Wuz Here!

DH was making fun of me, but when he told me that I thought he was pulling my leg. I was looking at the menu going, "How are soup and a baked potato finger food?!?!" Yet somehow it all works.

Why is there an excamation point after "Justin Bieber?" Don't tell me you like him too. :rolleyes1 :lmao:

Didn't they play any Hanson? :confused3

Oh Lord no! :rotfl: I just thought it was funny seeing this little country band with a banjo player singing "Baby Baby." Unfortunately, no Hanson in the songs we heard though. :sad2:

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :lmao::rotfl2:

I'm glad that you all (especially Paxton) enjoyed dinner and the show. Makes the cost well worthwhile if he is having that much fun!

It was great, and it made me have more fun than I probably would have otherwise to see him enjoying it so much!

Thanks for the lesson! However, I think that might end up being my one and only experience with a corn crib. :rotfl:

You're welcome! Hopefully you get the chance to visit. :goodvibes

Following along! :wave2: Our DW trip is Oct 19-26, so we will overlap some. We're also planning MK on 10/24 and AK on 10/25...so maybe we'll bump into you! Loving all the pictures and the TR within a PTR.

Your TN trip sounds fun so far. I've heard about the indoor water parks and debated staying at one when I was younger, but I was always afraid they'd be super packed.

Between the train museum and the Dixie Stampede, it sounds like Paxton had a fun time! :goodvibes

That looked like a great vacation, what a lovely part of the country to visit :goodvibes ... I'll have to add it to my 'US States to visit' list!

Welcome!! Happy to have you!! :goodvibes That's great we will be in the parks at the same time. I'm hoping I can come out of my shell some and say Hi to some other DISers, so that would be great to see you around the parks.

I'm sure in the height of summer it is...I was a little worried when we saw it for the first time Sunday night because I was wondering how in the heck we were going to keep up with DS with all those people packed in there! Luckily, we went at a time when they are still a "weekend" resort, so during the week it was not too busy at all.

He really seemed to have a lot of fun, and we did too! It was nice being able to relax a bit on vacation. :rotfl:

Tennessee is really beautiful with the mountains and scenery, and there is really a lot to do, but there is also a lot of relaxation to be found, as we discovered. It was nice not rushing off from one thing to the next every day like we tend to do on vacation!

So some ACTUAL Disney World planning has been going on! It's so hard truly trying to "plan" a vacation 6+ months in advance, because you really just never know what is going to happen between now and then. However, we did get some stuff done recently that I thought I would share before my next Tennessee TR installment.

Last week, DH and I sat down to price out our Disney tickets, deciding we should get them now since there are rumors of a price increase somewhere in the near future. After looking at a few different options, the cheapest one ended up being to get them from Undercover Tourist. The tickets were in the cart when I happened to glance through some recent posts on the DIS October FB group and saw a post from someone saying there could be an unannounced Universal Studios ticket increase coming in the next few days. So we decided it would be best to just go ahead and order those too since I don't keep up as much with Universal news and wouldn't want to end up paying a higher price.

The tickets came in the mail pretty quickly, and they are now in my hot little hands!

tickets.jpg

Yay! Our 5 Day MYW Park Hoppers and 1 Day Park-to-Park Universal tickets! I have to say, I think I'm more excited about the Universal ones, just because it has been SO LONG since we have needed to purchase them, and because it means I am FINALLY going to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter!!!

Of course, the dates and prices for the MNSSHP were also released last week, and that got me thinking about costumes. Yes, Halloween costumes in May! However, it's good that I did because DH happened to see on one of the discount sites he frequents that BuyCostumes.com was having a $10 sale on a ton of costumes, and it was the last day of the sale!! Unfortunately, I couldn't find something for all three of us, but I was able to order my costume. For only $10 with $6.99 shipping, I got my Tinkerbell costume!

tinkerbell.jpg

So, that means obviously we are going with a Peter Pan theme for our costumes. :goodvibes I'm a little worried about dressing up, because it's just not something I do, but I think it will make the party a little more fun to be dressed up. I actually caught some silver flats on clearance at Target not too long ago, so I think those will go great with the costume and will be comfortable to walk around the park in. DS is going to be Peter Pan, and I found what I think will be the perfect costume, I just have to wait for it to come back in stock.

peterpan.jpg

DH is going to be Captain Hook, and I feel like his will probably be the most complicated (and expensive!) but he is convinced it can be done and without spending a lot. Anything authentic looking is close to $100 though, and that's totally out of the question!

We haven't bought our MNSSHP tickets yet, but we are still planning to be at the party on Sunday October 27th.

And last but not least, I'm DONE with the offsite ADR dance! :yay: And I got all of the days and times I wanted. I did search in vain for a Be Our Guest ADR, but I'm thinking those were all snatched up by the people able to reserve 180+10. We are planning to have lunch there though, so I'm just happy to be able to eat there even if it isn't for dinner.

So what did we get? Not many, and they are pretty standard for us. We have our few places we enjoy eating and where we don't mind paying for a TS meal.

Thursday October 24th
DS's 3rd birthday! We are continuing our tradition of getting into the park prior to opening for breakfast with Pooh & Friends at Crystal Palace!

1596.jpg

Unfortunately it's a day with morning EMH, so I'm hoping it won't end up being too crowded. But I definitely want to kick off DS's birthday morning with this breakfast again, because it was so fun last year! Our ADR is scheduled for 8:10 am.

Saturday October 26th
DH was so disappointed that we swapped out our favorite lunch spot at DHS for 50's Prime Time Cafe last year, that we ended up eating here as a walk-up later on in the trip. So I made sure to get us an ADR at Sci-Fi!

2205.jpg

We will be having lunch on our DHS day on Saturday, and our ADR time is for 11:10 am.

Monday October 28th
On the day after our MNSSHP, we will be headed to Epcot. And if you have read my TR's in the past, you know what that means...

0680.jpg

4 cheese white pizza at Via Napoli!! Our ADR is for 11:30 am and I'm drooling over it right now. Maaaaaaybe I will venture out and try something new, but it is just too hard to pass up that delicious pizza!

Wednesday October 30th
Our departure day. :( Although we did not have the best experience there last year, I read enough comments to convince me we had service problems and that our experience was not the norm. So we are giving 'Ohana one more try.

2586.jpg

I scheduled our breakfast for 9:00 am to give us time to get up and get finished packing, and more than likely check out of Bonnet Creek before heading to the Polynesian for our meal.

That's it for ADR's! Yep, just 4. We are totally content with CS meals for the rest of the trip, as we like to eat and keep going with our day. :thumbsup2 I can't wait to see what ADRs some of my fellow October planners have gotten!

Yay for planning and for getting your park tickets! Oh my gosh, the Wizarding World is so much fun! You are going to love it!

I think the Peter Pan theme for your costumes is cute! If I'm remembering right I read a TR a couple years ago where there was a family who did the same thing. It was adorable.

Looks like you got some great ADRs too. Bummer about all the Be Our Guest ones being snatched up though. But lunch there is great!

I am so jealous of your costume! I picked out a $10 costume for there but I didn't purchase it right away because I was waiting for the 15% off and then it was gone. Now I can't find anymore costumes that are close to that inexpensive. Bummer. I shouldn't have been so cheap.

Love the ADRs you have. I have been working on mine, too. And I realized something - our CP ADR is going to be the 25th :faint: All along I was thinking the 24th and then I realized that my inlaws aren't coming in until the 24th while we arrive on the 23rd. Sheesh!

So, we are staying at a hotel near the airport on the 23rd. With my new job I booked the absolute latest flight out of Baltimore. It doesn't make sense to stay at a Disney resort that night and I get a free night with my Marriott rewards.

We will be checking in VWL on the 24th. If we head over to MK after we check in then maybe we can meet up and say hi to Paxton on his birthday.

Woo hoo for Universal!

I hope your ADR at Ohana is better this time around! Love that CP bkfst...and Via Napoli...yummy!! We aren't doing VN in Oct, but I think DH & I will eat there when we go in Feb for Princess 1/2 weekend.

I think we are doing the Peter Pan theme too for MNSSHP. I know DD is going to be Wendy, DS4 will be Captain Hook, DS3 will be Peter Pan. I am thinking Tinkerbell. Still need to figure out something for DH & DS11. We are going to the party on Fri 18th.

Like the costume Ideas, we've been trying to get DD to do a group costume, with me a Peter (of course) and DW and wendy and her a tink. So far no dice. We did do Kim Possible and her (Dr. and Dr. Possible) for our MNSSHP appearance a few years ago. A few CM actually recoginized our costumes.

I am suprised you guys don't dress up for Halloween. You and DH seem like the fearless type. Admittedly, we have a friend who has a Halloween party and expects original costumes every year. We did an awesome Mary Poppinsa and Bert 2 year ago. We actually don't dress EVERY year, but have had many, many costumes for that, even before our DD was born. I can't say I'm "into" costumes, but it can be fun.

Good move getting the tickets, price increase should be coming very soon. I am being watchful myself. You probably have a little while, but a party that late will very likely be sold out, so you should definitely pre-buy your tickets in the next few months!
