You are right that many zoos just aren't up to snuff, but like AK, many of them are. We have a world-class zoo in my city with natural habitats. It doesn't quite have the space that AK does on the savannah, but they do a good job with the environments. We actually recently acquired a Hippo from AK after one of ours passed away (of natural causes at a very old age), and they are currently building a new hippo environment.
I think the key is to know the facts about a specific facility before choosing to support it. Not all of them are bad.
I agree with you Off the top of my head I can think of 3 amazing zoos I have visited The Bronx Zoo in NY, The Atlanta Zoo in GA and the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington, DC
I also agree with a poster ( or 2 ) that stated that if the OP's friend is that against animals in captivity it's kind of hypocritical to support WDW by going at all I would also let her do her own research
