My wonderful lab Jake was diagnosed with lymphoma around Christmas 2003. We were given the chemo option but did not take it for the same reasons others have stated and also because he hated going to the vet so much that we had to sedate him ever since he was a pup (very difficult to take an unhappy 100 lb. dog to the vet). He was put on prednisone, which gave him a great 4 weeks - he ate like he used to (plus lots of good people food/treats) and played, chased birds, etc. I knew by the look in his eyes one night that he didn't feel good, and the next morning we made the last trip to the vet, where my daughter and I held him in our laps while he was given the shot. I told my daughter, who was sobbing, that this was our last act of love for him, and that some day I hope we give the same consideration to humans. He was the best.
Hugs to you and to all who have faced this.
