We are travelling in Sept for the first time with Megan. As she will only be a few months old we will need to take a pushchair and car seat.

i know i can take one for free which will be the pushchair and that i will have to check in the car seat.

Does the car seat have to fit within the normal size restrictions for a suitcase? Or are they more easygoing with car seats?

Also how do you all travel with them, do you put them in a bag or anything?

You are allowed to take both. You will have to check in the car seat, probably with the oversized luggage service at check in, and the pushchair will be taken from you when you board.

I did many flights with VA with DD since she was an infant and always had to take both. Send an email to VA - they are quite good at replying to specific queries, just to confirm as it has been some years since I needed all the kiddie equipment, but mine was always over and above the luggage allowance, i.e. you still get to take what they are entitled to as well.

You check the car seat in the with your cases and then have to take it to the oversize luggage area. There are no size restrictions.

We used to use the heavy duty plastic bag they provide at check in but they a) don't always have them and b) we have had the bag gets tears in it. We now have a car seat bag we bought from kiddicare.com :goodvibes

Last year with Virgin, both SIL and myself travelled with babies who didn't have seats and we both checked in travel cots and car seats and took our pushchairs through to hand in at the plane, no-one batted an eyelid.
We did this and checked in normal luggage.

Thanks Everyone, it was more the size of the car seat that i was concerned with! I think i'll buy one of the bags for it too! Just incase :)

There's always a chance of a car seat getting messed up in the hold, but I never had so much as a scratch on mine. Now the pram ..... the chassis got completely ruined after a couple of years of frequent longhaul flights, but then I guess that is to be expected.

Good idea! we flew with Virgin last month and on the way out they provided clear plastic bags for our buggy and car seat, on the return flight they didn't give us any bags and our car seat was quite dirty when we collected it. We had no problems regarding its size etc :)

They don't worry about the size and we always buy a strong plastic sack for ours and it has always been ok.
