I am seriously considering booking a 3 night cruise in December but before I do this has anyone ever travelled alone with a child. My husband is unable to take time off so I want to take my 6 year old son for his birthday. Do you advice me to do this? Will I enjoy myself alone? Please give me some advice. Thanks

We don't have children, but several times we have been seating with parents travelling alone with their child. The ages have ranged from 3 to teenager. All of them seemed to be having a great time. One was a mom to a young boy, and she bonded with another woman travelling with a boy of the same age. They hung out together for the whole cruise and their kids had a blast with each other. We've invited some of them to eat at Palo with us, but so far no one's taken us up on it because they opted to stay with the kid. I think you will have a great time.

Welcome to the Dis boards, 21disney.

This is a family web site, so please use caution when asking such direct questions. I'd recommend reading "Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask (Except On The Dis Cruise Board)."

Are we REALLY "alone" when traveling with 'someone?' I guess in the metaphysical sense, one could ask if we're ever NOT alone...

Ok, 21disney. All joking aside, I started traveling with my son to WDW when he was 4-and-a-half. Both of you will have a fantastic time! I basked in the absolute joy of vacation parenting: limited rules; extended boundaries; no cooking/laundry/housekeeping - it is a great experience. You will regain childhood insights too often lost by adults as we view our maturity in too serious a context and misdefine responsibility. Go, by all means. You AND your son will love it...

Yeah, what BD said. :)

I'm a single mom, and my little boy and I travel all over the place together, and have a ball. Our first big trip together, more than just a weekend, was celebrating his 4th birthday at WDW. He's 7 now, and we have been back to WDW several times since then and this will be our third Magic cruise together. We have a great time!! We're a team. :)

I'm sure you'll have a great time too!

I feel like I am an advocate for single parents travelling with children, even though you are only a temporary addition to the club we can offer some insights. My three DS's live for our vacations, last year we did 42 different roller coasters at 4 non-florida theme parks...The Disney Cruise is our all time favorite vacation, something for everyone, including time for Mom. It is one vacation where I never felt out of place as a single parent. There is every variety of "family" you can imagine on board. One of my sons didn't want to go to the kids club so he was happy to hang out with me and we had a great time. I had good luck with our table mates previously, and I enjoyed getting some "grown-up" conversation at dinner. The only thing I ever felt I missed out on was dinner at Palo (where were you Barb?? I'd have gone with you) I didn't want to go by myself and no one ever invited me. This time around I was lucky enough to find another single mom on the DIS boards that was going on the same cruise and we plan to go to Palo's together one night. I'm sure once you have a cruise date, you will be able to find someone on these boards going on your cruise so you can feel like you will know someone. You will have a great time together, so have no fear plan away!!
