Hi! We will be flying in Nov. We are undecided on what stroller to use. We have a nice Eddie Bauer stroller that was pricey but very comfy for our 8 month old son. We are not sure if we should bring this one and have it put in the cargo as we get on the plane and risk the chance og it being broken-what are your experiences any broken or damaged strollers. Or should we buy a cheaper stroller to take instead.
Thanks, Amber:earsgirl:

We have always brought our best stroller any time we travel. We always bring it right to the end of the jetway & they store it for us & it is there waiting when we get off the plane. We have flown many times & the stroller is fine. I'm sure it is put in last. Been using the same stroller since 2000!!

Gate checking is definitely safer for the stroller. It's also fantastic that you have use of the stroller right up untill you board and then it's waiting for you when you get off the plane. When you get to your gate, ask the attendant at the desk for a gate check ticket to put on the stroller.

I remember hearing that there is less risk of something happening to it if it's really closed up tight so the wheels don't catch and pull or something. I just brough one of those bungee cord type things with the hooks on the ends and wrapped it around the stroller to secure it really tight. I didn't want to risk the locking thingy breaking so it wouldn't stay folded during our trip. It ended up being just fine.

If your baby is comfy in it...definitely bring it. :)

Gate checking is definitely the way to go! You roll it down the ramp, leave it, get on the plane, and when you get off there it is waiting for you again. Because it is the last thing on the plane, it doesn't get crushed and mashed---at least, I have never had a problem.

That said, I prefer to bring a smaller lighter weight stoller on trips. It's so nice to be able to fold it easily, fit it in the car with all the luggage, etc. Will you be driving your own rental car or using Disney transportation? You will be doing a lot of folding and unfolding as you get on the busses, monorail, etc. My favorite stroller for travel is a light weight Graco with 2 trays--one for mom and one for baby, with a big basket underneath, that also reclines for naps---around $30. (?) at Target. Another advantage to smaller is that is easier to maneuver through crowds and shops. JMHO, but I hope it helps.

I'm pretty sure the posters didn't just drive there strollers up to the gate and expect them to automatically appear at their destination. But I used to know a flight attendent and he said a lot of people actually did just drive up the jetway with their strollers and left them parked there, without actually going thru the gate check process.

It is important to actually go thru the process to make sure your stroller actually gets to the same city as you do. We travel with a wheelchair, which is the same process as gate checking a stroller, so I've had a lot of experience with gate checking.
Ask about gate checking when you first check in for your flight. Sometimes, they will give you a gate check tag then; sometimes they will tell you to ask at the gate. The gate check tag is usually a bright color and the city code on it identifies where you are going (the same as your luggage). The bright color alerts to baggage handlers that it has some special instructions - which may be just picking it up at the gate and/or delivering it to the gate on the city marked on the tag.

Talk to the gate agent before boarding begins and watch to make sure the tag is marked correctly. Sometimes, the only thing that needs to be filled in is is the correct city code (like if you are on a non-stop, direct flight). Sometimes, you have other choices (like delivery to the gate or to baggage claim). If you have a connecting flight, you will usually have a choice of getting it back at the gate at your connecting city or at your final destination. If you have a tight connection, you might not want to get it back until your final destination.
As others posted, it's important to remove anything that might get caught, fold it and secure it before you leave it. Things that get caught and torn off are one way strollers ore wheelchairs get damaged. If you don't fold it, the baggage handlers (who may or may not know how your stroller folds) will attempt to fold it, and that's another way that damage might occur.
Your stroller could still get damaged even though the gate checked items are put in last, but it is less likely than if you just sent it thru the regualr luggage. Wheelchairs in general are much more sturdy than strollers and still sometimes get damaged. In 16 years of travel with a wheelchair, we've had one instance of damage - an antitipper (a small bar that sticks out from the back of the wheelchair to prevent it from tipping over backwards) got bent.
Once the plane lands, they do unload the gate checked items first, but if you are the first ones off, the items won't be at the gate yet. A lot of times my DD's wheelchair is not brought to the gate until at least half of the people have gotten off of the plane. And, don't forget to pick up your stroller. We are often the very last people off the plane, but on most flights, there is at least one stroller still sitting at the door waiting to be picked up when we get off. Whether the people forgot they had gate checked it or didn't know it would be delivered to that gate, I don't know. But, I've seen enough stollers sitting at the gate to know that they are forgotten.

We brought our $20 balloon stroller for DD 2 1/2 and it worked like a charm. It was very easy to gate check and easy to use the whole trip especially getting on and off busses... Good Luck!

If you're worried about it getting damaged, a place like The Right Start sells a special kind of bag that you can use to put your stroller in when you check it at the gate. I used one when I traveled with my son last year and it kept the stroller clean. We have a large Graco stroller that I used and it was a godsend.

Definitely use the more comfy stroller (it'll be better for you too!) and check out the bag if you want to keep it clean.

last year we had out first flight...we totally clueless about it all ( entire trip actually  )but no one told us about gate checking or anyhting...so we strolled through the airport with our DD then 3 in her stroller ( i believe we have had intention of bringing it on the plane with us- REMEMBER i said we were clueless!) we had a connecting flight, from Milwaukee to St Louis , st louis to Ft lauderdale.
each time we got off each plane, in the walk though area( not sure of name - jetway??) the stroler was there waiting for us. so it obvisously came on each plane with us....not sent to our final stop.
we used american airlines last year....this year we are flying NWA so i am not sure how it will work wiith them, but hoping just a smoooth

Thanks everyone for your replies we have decided to buy a lightweight stroller with all the extras at wal mart online.

We usually fly Northwest because we live in one of their hubs, but all the airlines pretty much work the same.
Just ask about gate checking when you first check in (follow what I posted in my other post) and you won't have anything unexpected happen.

All the airlines do gatecheck which is really convenient.

I did have a bad experience once though. When dd was 10 mos, we went to AZ. I gate checked our favorite stroller (Combi). When I got it at the other end, it was all bent underneath. They wrecked it! I was so bummed, I loved that stroller. Anyway, I carried dd and pushed the lame stroller all the way to baggage claim and the complaint office. They very graciously wrote me a check for the stroller and took it from me. The bummer was that I was now in the airport w/ a 10mo, no stroller and luggage. Plus, we couldn't find a Babies R Us or similar store that sold our stroller. We just bought a cheaper one and hated it.

I think my experience is the exception. We're going to WDW in Dec and will be gate checking 2 Combi strollers this time (the Savvy and full size-bought a new one w/ dd#@). Hoping for the best, but we're flying Phila-Chicago, then Chicago- Orlando.

Check at your own risk, but for the most part they're good at gate check.

OP, sounds like you made a good decision with a nice lightweight stroller. Have a great trip!
We've flown many, many times with strollers of all shapes and sizes and have encountered very few problems with gate checking. On one airline (can't remember which--United maybe?) I was going to gate check but since we had a little umbrella stroller they actually had me bring it onboard and put it in the coat closet. That was really nice. Otherwise we've left the stroller(s), tagged, in the jetway, and only once has one been damaged--the locking clasp had been snapped off. Also, one time, even though our stroller was tagged "claim at gate" for our layover airport, the stroller was sent on to our next plane and I had to schlep through the airport, alone with baby and gear and no stroller, but I survived. All in all, stroller gate-checking has been a great help in all my travels with babies and small kids!

Hope your trip will be wonderful!:sunny:

Lollipop Mom had great advice

We have always used bungee cords and have never had any problems/damage. Without the bungee cords, a stroller can pop open and be more susceptible to damage.

We bought the Maclaren Volo stroller for our trip two years ago. We took it on the Disney cruise as well. We are now expecting again and we just booked a family reunion cruise for 2006. We will be taking the stroller again because it was so light, less than 8 pounds, easy to fold, basket underneath, and comfy for our little one. I would buy another one in a heart beat! I found it at Right Start but now Babiesrus carries them.
