Traveling with lap top question?

Is it safe to keep it in the room safe or will it fit? would it be safe in the case in the drawer or what? thanks for any help Want to be sure i return home with it once we arrive onsite. Thanks

It will not fit in the safe. For the first few days we left the computer with the front desk and they lock it up. We got tired of waiting in line to get it back so we took our chances with keeping it in the room. We would not advertise it and left it hidden in our suitcase.

It was fine for 12 nights but again it just takes the one employee on the edge to make that a bad call...

Ive saw a few of those and wondered if that would be the best best, usually when we travel or whatever i just leave it in the laptop bag or case since we are usually on there 2-3 days max.

We left our laptop in the room and it was never touched. I guess it only takes one bad employee but maybe they can put a note on the room saying a laptop is in the room just in case it goes missing they know you had one.

We brought our laptop with us and it did fit in the safe, so we had no problems.

I have to bring my laptop as well. Unfortunately, I will have to do a little studying while I am there.

However, has anyone by any chance ever measured the inside of the safe at All Star Music?

My laptop is a little bigger than most because I have both the alpha and numeric key pads on mine.

I travel for work and have to bring my laptop obviously. When I am not in the room it is locked in a suitcase in the closed closet. I --thankfully--have not had a problem. But I am intrigued by the lock idea the other poster had.

Last time we took ours. Always downloaded the photos of the day and started the next day with a fresh memory card. (only had 2 gb at the time now bumped it up to 8gb. only...)
And left the photoshow going all day until we got back again the next night. And it was never touched the housekeeper left a note saying much she enjoyed it.

i have never felt like any of our property was endangered while on Disney property. as a matter of fact my wife thought I had our camera, and I thought she had it and we went to philharmagic(sp) and I asked her to take a picture of something and she said I had the camera we looked around I went back to our stroller and there it was right on top with her bag and stuff. not even touched.
Now I do not recommend this, but just goes to show how little troubles we had there....and also that my wife DID have the camera!!!

I know a few people who have had cash and electronics stolen by Mousekeeping at WDW (the person that stole the camera was nice enough to leave the memory cards and the bag). If you bring a laptop, buy a lock for it. While the lock won't stop a determined theif with bolt cutters, it will prevent someone from casually strolling away with your computer. Just make sure that if you attach the lock to a table that they can't slip it off by lifting the table legs -- it's best to attach it to a crossbar or something bolted to the wall.

Hmmm interesting thread, I guess I am naive in my thinking, but we have always taken either DH or my laptop every time we travel, and have never thought of locking or putting in a safe....in fact we leave it out on the desk pretty much.... one more thing for me to obsess over that I had never thought about. Will have to look into the lock I guess.

I take mine all the time on trips, including to WDW and have never had a problem. Mine won't fit in the safes. I usually put it in one of the drawers, under all of the memorabilia collected each day (maps, souvies, etc). It's a risk yes, but easier than having to take it down the desk each day and retrieve it each night.

My DH brings his laptop each time we go. His does fit in the safe, but since yours has the 10key, it may not fit. I would definitely buy the lock. Better safe than sorry!

Whenever I travel, I almost always have my laptop with me.
I just hide it in a drawer under my clothes. I also hide my laptop bag inside my suitcase so that it is not out in the open and obvious.

I have heard a few stories about valuables going missing, sad to say. The laptop lock is a great idea. When I bring my laptop, I have locked it in my suitcase and put the case in the closet. It has been fine. And we usually put the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door when we leave the room each day....as DVC members, we do not get mousekeeping every day anyway; it would make the odd "intruder" think twice perhaps before entering. If Maintenance needs room access, they usually call first. And remember to lock your patio/balcony door if you have one. Especially if on the first floor.

Just something for you to think about. There was a thread in the Community Board some time back about a woman that took her laptop with her. The laptop was not stolen BUT it was accessed by an employee. It had her banking information, her business information, and personal information (home address, SS numbers on it, credit cards). Like I said, just something to think about and what all people have access to.

If you do get a cable lock, be sure to get one with a combination, not a barrel key. Anyone can open the key type easily with the barrel of a cheap bic pen -- it's the same diameter.

I both lock mine and stash it in an inconspicuous place, and NOT inside a bag in the closet. I'd tell you my hiding place, but then I'd have to kill you

Oh, yes, ANY laptop should have a front-end login on it, so that you cannot just boot it up and get to the programs and the associated data. (For lots of scenarios -- just think if it got stolen from your car, which has happened to a ridiculous number of Federal employees' laptops.)

PS---> I wanted to bring my laptop to download pictures on to, and I was more worried about it sitting in a hot car during the day that we did the pre-registration/check in (before you can get it into your room) and while traveling. I think the locks and the logins are all a great idea, but don't forget to back up your important data before leaving, and putting it on a separate hard disk safely at home (just in case!)
