traveling with a dog?

well this is it, were going to (hopefully) pick up our family member, Treasure the Golden, tomorrow. She is up at my moms which a full days car ride away.

We will be taking the minivan so theres room for her, but what else do I need to be aware of? Obviously will take food, collar, leash and water and take breaks where we need to.

we wont need to stay in a hotel just need to make sure she is confortable.

Ideas?

I travel alot with my Brittany, Snickers. My parents are about 5-6 hours drive and we do it about every other month. He also goes camping with us every other weekend in the summer.

I would advise - unless you really know the dog - not to feed before trip. I offer water at our pit stops and maybe a small treat - but only if you are sure your dog doesn't get car sick.

Snickers usually is a little excited for the first 15 minutes, then he just settles down and rests...unless he can get a hold of something to chew.

Be sure not to leave the car closed - even if you are just going into McDonalds - it gets so hot so fast - open all the windows a little.

I actually travel with Snickers in a crate in my Envoy. If we are camping, then he sometimes gets to ride beside the kids in the back seat - his favorite!

The only place we don't travel with Snick - is to Disney (& like trips) just too far and wouldn't be fair to him - plus would take a lot of energy on our part with disney kennel policies.

Dont encourage her to eat! First vet visit for our boxer she tossed her cookies on my wood box thats sits between the 2 front seats. Clean up was easy but yuck! Take something for her to chew on...no shoes, socks or rawhide though. Our boxer has a blanket she lays on on the sofa so we usually take that with us on long trips so she knows where her "bed" is at in the van.
