Traveling to WDW by car....

Yes it is...and you went right thru my little armpit of a town! LOL

Yep, but it does have some pretty areas in the historic district. Did the Tour of homes in elementary school a thousand years ago :rotfl: DH want to go down there to fish.

Sorry to hijack....but I gotta tell Princess this...LOL

oh man, those old houses drive me nuts. Let ya in on a little secret...the ONLY time this town cleans up is when that Tour of HOmes is going on. (BTW that starts tomorrow) and this town wont do ANYTHING for the rest of any neighborhoods...only the historic district! After that happens, the cleaning and the "maintenance" on the town goes to crap! LOL Its all a bunch of BS!

However, we do have dern good fishing here!:yay:

And a cute little Locksmith shop and Oil change place next to the Waffle House!! (Thats me! :lmao:)

The ultimate lesson for any Disney visitor is this: get there early. No matter the crowd levels (which are estimated and aren’t dead accurate, as you’ll see from others who have complained about this in many posts), I think it’s simply best to get there bright and early. I love to sleep in… Love it… I say “it’s vacation, why should I wake up early”. Then I show up an hour after the park opens and kick myself while my wife just grins with the “I told you” look.

While it's generally a good idea to arrive at the parks early, I have said before and will say again - the RD mania on the DIS is sometimes a bit overblown. (not trying to pick on your post, it's just the first I saw commenting onthe subject. I actually agree with most of what you say.)

I don't think that if this family arrives after rd their FIRST day, and aims for RD the rest of their trip - their trip will hardly be ruined. (we've ha a number of trips where we arrived well after RD, and STILL did plenty with minimal waiting!)

There is SO much to do at WDW, they could easily spend a FULL day in MK, and not do a single FP attraction. (though avoiding ALL lines is nearly impossible; there's often lines for the restrooms! )We often spend half days in the parks and we simply do fewer e-rides. Then on days when we'll have a full day, we do more e-rides. Even if you arrive at noon, you can still usually gather multimple fastpasses in MK. And we typically skip the castle shows and parades! Often at AK, late in the afternoon, the park clears out. On our most recent visit (granted it was during the FLower Festival) we spent an entire day inthe park and I think we only rode one Fp attraction: Maelstrom. Any you rarely need a fp for that. We saw some festival attractions, we walked the WS, walked on SE, and did some of the things we rarely do - like walk through Innoventions, see teh Canad movie, and hit the Cola sampling room. I can't say we waited in any real lines all day either. (Our longest wait of the day was waiting for our table at Le Cellier. The waits there are always crazy - And that's WITH the required ADR!)

Seriously, on our arrival day, sometimes it's just fun to grab a table, a bite to eat, and just sit and take in the idea that you have arrived - and I'm not one to spend much of the trip sitting. (a great spot for this is sitting outdoors at the GF's quick serve place!)

I do agree withthe rest of your post however. I think it's tough to do WDW if you are poorly rested. Driving long distance tires me out. Even without heavy traffic, just the stress of having to pay close attention the whole way to road conditions, other crazy drivers, and sometimes navigation is tiring.

If you are concerned about spending much $$ to be at WDW, and can afford the time - it would be worth driving 95% of the distance, then staying some place inexpensive that's say - within an hour of WDW, and arriving rested.

The other consideration - at least for me - is that as soon as I arrive - I NEED to get my bags out of the hot car and into the room at a bare minimum. Heat will ruin many medicines, will ruin make up and other toiletries, will melt many foods. It may even cause bottles to explode. Oh - and lets not forget that other item so ubiquitous when traveling with small kids - CRAYONS! A crayon left ina hot car will make a HUGE mess in a matter of seconds...just ask my dad. (Sometiems inthe 70's we made a HUGE mess one road trip by leaving crayons inthe car!)

But the real reason I came to this thread was that we are thinking of driving ourselves. I have driven before - and my concern is this - finding quick roadside dining along the way that isn't complete garbage. I rarely eat McD's and often feel ill when I do. Too many times I've had stale, flat-been-in-a-paper-cup-too-long diet soda...it's not yummy. Does anyone have suggestions for places (dare I say -chains?) that are little above the Shoney's-Perkins-Applebee's level of quality, but in that same price range and QUICK. I'd LOVE to find a quick serve/fast food place that had excellent fresh healthy food.

That is funny, I never knew that. I don't think we have ever been off that main road in all the years we have gone through there :rotfl2:

Well, next time I'm thru, I will stop and say hi :thumbsup2

RD is over-rated, we have been there on occassion, but really only for special to us events. I like my sleep too much and don't like to be crowded at the gate.

We take a cooler and I toss in anything I think might get too hot while we are in a park and our room isn't ready yet. It works great.

If we arrive early in the morning, we hit the food court for breakfast, then head to a park a little later. I think we will probably arrive closer to noon this time and will just have to see what mood I am in as to where we end up.

We've driven it tons of time from Gonzales, La. Hi neighbor:goodvibes Anyway, we usually leave about 5 a.m. bring breakfast to eat in the car and with 1 stop for lunch and a stop for gas/bathroom break we usually make it there no later than 5:30 p.m. and that's with loosing the hour. We usually check in to one of the hotels on 192 and grab some dinner then we get up early the next morning and usually check in at our Disney resort (usually POR) around 7:30 a.m. We have them hold our bags since the room isn't ever ready that early, we grab some breakfast at the food court and then head out for a full day. I find this has always worked great as we are not paying for an extra night at POR and we are able to get well rested up after the drive for our first full day. I don't think I'd function too well at the park my 1st day trying to sleep in a car all night or have to wake up in the middle of the night to drive.

Well I am with you, I will be the Beast with no sleep. We drive from Livingston, La and do about the same times as you guys. We are driving down the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and staying off site then checking in at POR (Riverside) on Wednesday morning. Do you have any favs for an offsite hotel close?

We usually just stop midway down 192 (i think it's 192 it vould be 190?) it's the road with all the hotels in kissimmee where you actually drive past Celebration (the EPCOT community Disney developed). We've stayed at the Confort Inn and I think the Quality Inn but honestly they all are pretty much your standard hotel. Nothing super fancy but clean and with a free breakfast in the morning, if you want it. We usually pay aroinf $65 for the room which isn't bad compared to POR and we've just never seen the point of spending the extra money when we're just going to eat and go to sleep. It usually takes us about 15 minutes to get to POR the next morning and we're ready for a full day at the Parks:)

BTW, I notice in your siggy that you miss your mom. I feel you, I lost my dad 3 years ago this month and it still hurts so bad. :littleangel:

My sympathy to you for losing your mom. :guilty:

Yes, I miss her very much and it is still very painful. It will be 2 years in Aug that I lost her, she was so young (60) and loved WDW as much as anyone could.

In short, I’d rather show up early (I don’t believe I said RD, but nonetheless) than later. During crowded times, the difference of 2 hours is compounded and could cause you some headaches later in the day. This goes back to my 'getting your money's worth' blabbing.
I also believe I mentioned something about the season the OP is going in and that it may not be a huge deal to arrive a little bit ‘late’.

Regardless, I love sleep. I still try to get to the park at least an hour within opening. Moreso it depends on the season, and the April/May timeframe is typically busy (not level 9 busy, but busy enough). ;)

We take three days to get there...we just take our time and it seems to work out well.

I think I'll start looking at the maps & seeing about gas/food stops & of course about perhaps getting a cheap hotel for the time we do get in & sleep and like you said get to our resort & drop off bags, etc so cokes don't burst in my car (again!) and get to whichever park for whatever time we get there. we have hoppers so if one park is busy we'll head over to another. thanks to these boards i've been keeping a log of great ideas & activities that I never heard of so that should keep us busy & interested too .. without being overly exhausted. The more I think about it - this does seem the most practical. But if we can't leave until early afternoon (let's say 1pm) from New Orleans, will we still be getting in too late? I'd hate to get to our "one night hotel" for like 1am & then get hardly any sleep bc i'd be too worried about getting up & getting checked in at CBR. THEN of course if we don't get enough rest or get in too late - i'd hate to waste the $ on a hotel i'd only be staying in for a few hours! Am I the only one who worries too much about one simple decision?????

Bikinpunk, I pretty much agree with what you are saying. I don't know that arriving later causes headaches, but the nine to ten hour is often productive - assuming the weather is good. (On my most recent visit, in that hour most days it was bitter cold - 30's or low 40 and WINDY! we gladly waited until 10 to leave each day and the sun had warmed everything a bit. We also knew the parks were very light, so avoiding the cold wind that extra hour really helped our endurance.)

I don't think WDW is all that busy this year. I generally agree with you, but I think this year is a bit of an exception.

The other point I'll make is this. Once upon a time, adding individual days to your ticket was fairly expensive, even if you bought an extended six or seven day ticket. Under MYW though, if you are buying say a six day ticket and are thinking of adding day seven - the difference is only about $3.50 per person. You can't even see a 90 minute movie in a theater for $3.50! If I go into a park for more than an hour, then in my mind, I've gotten $3.50 worth of entertainment. The way pricing is now structured, there's a big dropoff after day three. For an Adult:Day 1: $84.14, Day 2: add $82, Day 3: add $67 to the 2day ticket, Day 4: add $6 to the 3day ticket. Day 5: add $3.2...and it stays at that rate for days 6-10.

The prices are slightly lower for kids', but similar in structure.

Suzanne -
I like your idea of seeing where the day takes you. Sometimes one of my favorite things to do on arrival day is just to hop on whichever bus arrives first.
Typically, the one thing we get flustered by on our vacation (minor bickering?) is getting to ADR's on time.

Oh, and I do agree that the minimal traffic you encounter at night can often make night driving a good idea...I've just also experienced arriving at WDW sleepy. If I arrive sleepy, I nap and fix it right away. I need a certain amount of rest personally to deal with the crowds. Me too tired inthe parks is FAR more trouble than arrving two hours later. He hee...I didn't think I'd bring this post full circle. :wizard:

Have a great trip!

Mickeyluvr.... I'm an "NERD" too... ("Never Ever Rope Drop")...

....AND our last visits have been the ever-busy JULY month... AND...we've seen EVERYTHING without rushing to wake up early in the morning...

OP... I completely understand how you can agonize over your decision...I am the SAME way...

The truth is...you will not know NOW... how you will feel THEN...

For example... if you make a 'cheap hotel' ressie then are you going to feel you HAVE to stop? And then you'll stay up till late at night ANYWAY because you are SO excited? That sounds just like me. SO I guess the answer is... Do a little research on some possible 'stops' on the way... so you know some options... (recommend www.tripadvisor.com).

Then print them out and voila... you'll know what's available. As you get to each 'possible' stop... assess how you and DBF are feeling...then if you are 'wired' you can keep on keeping on... if you're tired...you can stop...

Just pace yourself and stay safe..

Hugs,
Mary

429, also known as the Daniel Webster Western Beltway is off the Florida Turnpike (take Exit 267A), it is well marked. It really cuts down on the time it takes to get to WDW (almost zero traffic). I-4 is horrible.

Ok so i've found the hwy everyone is talking about and another post said something about hwy 429 will bring me closer to CBR (is that right???) .... but once I take hwy 429 what road do I join up with to get to CBR? Google says to merge with Western Way then buena vista then cayman rd for CBR. Is this right??

Thanks for the advice - I was thinking about this but was approaching it all wrong - I was making a specific schedule rather just what's available when i MAY need it! thanks! I'm just ready for the trip to be here so I can stop agonizing over planning this trip!!!

I know you take Exit 8 (Hartzog Rd) off 429 and once you come off the ramp, you will see the entrance gate, that is Western Way. Take a left on West Buena Vista and go 2 miles to Cayman Rd

I don't know why I thought you said CSR, it is close to the back entrance. CBR is close to Pop Century. With all the signs, you won't have a problem finding it.
