Just wondering has anybody ever had problem with bringing a mono pod with them in there carry on luggage?? Also what do you do with your memory cards. Does the airline x ray machine do any damage to them??

Thanks for your help!!

They are very likely to have a problem with a monopod. It could be used as a striking weapon, so is a no-no. There are people that swear that x-rays mess up memory cards, but I think the experts have pretty much proven that the power levels used in airport x-ray machines are not nearly strong enough to damage data. If you are worried, request a hand check.

Memory cards are absolutely fine. Only fairly fast film will be affected - nothing on a digital camera setup.

I was told very clearly that my monopod would not be allowed when I brought it to the airport a couple trips ago. It doesn't help that it's a fairly solid Bogen aluminum one, and hence very club-like - but I think it's a long shot regardless. What I did was ask before my checked luggage was taken away, that was I had a chance to talk it from my carry-on stuff and put it in my checked luggage.

I'm not trying to start a general conversation about TSA restrictions, and I don't doubt that people have been restricted from bringing a monopod on, but I think it's a little odd they won't allow that yet I consistently see knitting needles! I know which one I'd have a greater concern about.

I'm flying at least once a month for work and see lots of things that make me shake my head. A couple of months ago someone brought a wood baseball bat on a plane. :confused3 Maybe they were a professional and it was for work...but I don't think so.

It's probably the luck of the draw on the screener, but I wouldn't risk trying to take it as a carry on.

Oh - and in my years of travel I've never had a problem with a memory card and they've gone through xrays many times.

My monopod looks a lot like a sectional aluminum tent pole (which it is) and it has never registered even a look from a TSA agent. It doesn't hurt that it could also be mistaken for a collapsible cane.

Either way, the 3 ounce monopod does not appear to be a threat, works well, and seems to be ok to carry on a plane.

May be slightly OT, but what issues, if any, have you experienced taking your cameras in your carry ons? I have to travel to Vermont in October on business and thought about taking my DSLR to try and get some shots of the foliage while I am there. The TSA site is kind of sketchy on photography equipment and even though I have flown many times for business, never wanted to take my camera before.
Thanks!

Thanks!

I've been doing it all summer since I got my DSLR (I'd say 10-12 flights) and haven't had them give the camera gear a second glance. It is within the rules to carry on.

Last year my nephew came to visit and he had his camera gear hand inspected twice. The first time was understandable - he had a huge bottle of lens cleaner. Oops! At that time he was told he should open his camera bag and expose it for inspection whenever he went thru a check point. I have not done that myself on any trips. Once again - it's all who you get screening in regards to procedures, but you will be allowed to carry on the DSLR, even if they hand screen it.

They're going to probably examine any bag with electronic equipment in it. Carrying a camera (including any SLR) should not faze the screeners in the least, I'm sure they see many every day.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!!! I think I'll do what Groucho said and ask before we check our bags. Because we are using ME I would rather carry the mono pod with me. We are going to MK and plan on staying until the park closes on our arrival day. Need the mono pod for those night time shots.!!

Again thanks all!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
