Travel Warning

I'm personally more nervous about the lone white gunman in American shooting up malls, schools, workplaces, etc than any foreign terrorist. I will continue to travel the same way as I always have.

I live in China, and I ma thankful that I don't have any fears of terrorists blowing up Chinese planes to or from China. While it could happen, our borders and security in China are over the top!

We arrive at WDW this Friday & I'm concerned about the travel warning issued. Although it emphasizes travel abroad, it does mention crowded locations & events here in the US. Anyone else worried about upcoming travel?

I'm far more worried about the morons on the road getting there than anything happening at WDW.

With Thanksgiving approaching (and crazy park crowds), the recent Paris attack, and now a US travel alert, I was expecting a lengthy slog through security before flying out of MCO early Monday afternoon. Expecting TSA to be extra vigilant, I put my documents in order, liquids within reach and shoes loosened well before joining the security lines.

Imagine my surprise when the agents supervising the lines were barking orders to NOT remove shoes, nor take out liquids and laptops. Only metal detectors in use, no back-scatter machines. Every single passenger treated as if they had "Pre"-check! Less than 10 minutes in line total.

Heck, I encountered more scrutiny passing through YHZ (Halifax, NS) security at the start of my trip with our generally cheery, friendly agents than in Orlando with the country being on watch for possible threats.

Honestly, an attack could happen anywhere in the US or other western countries. Unfortunately I think it is unlikely that the US (and Australia) will go the next 12 months without something happening. And it is scary, but we can't stop living our lives because of it, especially when you consider the number of potential targets and possible days and times an attack could occur...really the possibilities are infinite. Without a credible warning about a specific location I wouldn't cancel plans. On Tuesday night I was at a concert at a large arena which featured the biggest Australian flag you've ever seen in your life. It definitely could have been a target. However, I wasn't NOT going to go to something I'd really been looking forward to over a slim possibility. That way you would be letting the terrorists win.

I wish I could be as not bothered as most of you seem to be, but I am very anxious. Not only am I headed to Disney for four months (DCP), but on the way I have a layover in Chicago, which is apparently one of the rumored targets. I know logically the risk is low and obviously I'm not going to not do my DCP, but that doesn't help me be any less afraid

I'm nervous for a couple reasons. One reason if I've had a few people tell me the U.S. Is dangerous and I shouldn't go. I don't really believe it but at the same time it's a thought. And it's not just terror attacks that make me nervous. It's the crime. We're going to New Orleans for Christmas and I read about armed robbers coming into a restaurant and robbing diners. Then the other day some people in a park were shot and then there was another story about a doctor getting shot when he stopped to help a lady who was being dragged down the street. I'm from Canada for reference and I never thought about it being dangerous when I planned this trip. The second part is because DH is Arab. Not long ago a couple of men were speaking arabic on a plane and this other lady said it made her nervous so they kicked them off. They ended up calling 911 and were allowed back on but I don't know what to do if we get profiled due to my DH country of origin. I probably never would've thought to call 911 and we would've missed our flight. It's a scary world for everyone right now.

Do you get anxious when you get in your car to drive to the airport? If not, you should. By far the most dangerous part of your travels.

I know anxiety comes from the very primal part of the brain, and isn't logical, but it helps me to apply logic...I tell myself to STOP, and then I keep repeating "I am safe, this is ok" over and over. It does help.

There has been a travel warning at this time of year almost every year since 2001. This is not a travel ban. I have no reason to change my plans!

No plans to travel but I wouldn't worry about it. Look at it this way. The week you travel to Disney might be the very week they attack your home town and being at Disney saves your life.

The only way to avoid being part of a random act of terror is to hole up at home. And that's what they want. Don't give them that.

Over school vacation, April 2013, the kids and I headed to Florida to visit some relatives as well as spend a few days at WDW. Typically, we would head into nearby Boston on Marathon Monday to visit some of the sites and watch the runners. Had we not been traveling to FL, we likely would have been in Boston during the bombings. Which isn't to say that we've avoided Boston since the attacks, as we haven't. It just illustrates how true your statement is.

Maybe it's because I've always lived in major cities (NY, Philadelphia) and you just learn early how to be aware but I'm no more concerned than when I move about in Manhattan on the train.

I'm still continuing my plans to travel to france and Germany next June or July

I'm more concerned about the lone gunman(woman) regardless whether they be white,black, brown, orange, pink or any other pigmentation there is out there who shoot up malls, schools or workplaces. Sorry for the rant, but skin color is no concern to me; a lunatic with a gun is. But like you, I will also continue to travel the way I always have.
