Travel Trailer on Pop-up Site

I know this has been asked before and I read some of those threads. It sounds like people do get away with this. I’m hoping we don’t have to. After we booked our full hook-up site our friends changed their dates (they are the whole reason we are going) and now there aren’t any available for the dates we need. I’m thinking of booking a pop-up site as our back up plan and will continue checking for a full hook up site daily. Trip is in March. I’m confident our 21 foot trailer will fit on the pad but not our vehicle too. Worst case, if we cannot end up getting an RV site, could we just park in the guest parking or is there usually room to fit a vehicle too? We could survive without full hook ups but I would rather not. But we have camped that way plenty of times. What are the chances I will get lucky and end up getting a site? Slim to none? Somewhat likely? We had to change dates last March and there were no sites but after a day or two of checking we got one. But that was for just two nights. Now I’m looking for 7. 😬

First, you will likely fit on a popup site. Some of the tent/popup sites are very short, but many should fit your TT and tow vehicle. You can always park the vehicle in the overflow parking lot up front. Many people do that regardless of the site type.

As for getting a Full reservation, keep trying, especially around the 30 day mark. That is when people on a package have to pay or cancel. Many people have been successful getting what they need with persistence and frequently checking.

I'm not a fan of your plan but will try to help by saying that you don't have to get all 7 nights at once. Whatever level you are trying for (Premium Meadow, Premium, Preferred, Full) also check for one night or two nights (or similar small chunks) at a time. You might end up with all 7 nights but in 4 different reservations, for example. You can get multiple reservations combined into one (one checkin, one ADR date, one checkout date) to simplify your stay. I've done it myself. Just make sure they are all the same level.

You'll pay deposits for each reservation you make and they will all be combined if you merge the reservations so you will prepay a good portion of your Fort stay that way.

Since I am someone with a popup, personally I hope you get the dates you are looking for on a full hook-up site and the Tent sites can be used by Tent campers, popup campers, or Class B campers which is what they are intended for.

Good luck!

PS - weekend nights (Fri/Sat) will likely be the hardest ones to get. But try daily (or more often!)

I’m not a fan of this plan either 😂 Do you know if we get multiple reservations for chunks of our stay would that mean we have to keep moving? Because if it’s a choice between no hook ups for the week or having to move three or four times I would rather stay put. I am a pretty big rule follower in general but if we are willing to live without hookups and park our vehicle in the parking lot I don’t have a lot of guilt about taking up a pop-up spot. I do feel somewhat optimistic we will find something between now and then 🤞 I will keep religiously checking.

If all the reservations are for the same category, I haven't heard of people having to move. You can call down in advance and have the multiple reservations merged into one.

I’m going to try this. I was able to get a Full Hook Up site for 3/2-3/4. I’ll keep trying to piece it together in smaller chunks. Thanks!

We were able to get several nights pretty quickly. We are now just trying to land a full hook up site for 3/4 and 3/6. Once we have those nights I’m going to call and merge them and cancel the pop up site. I hope we can get them soon. I’m sick of checking multiple times a day. I was surprised I got Saturday night so quickly.

The tent sites have electric and water, just no drain for the black/gray tank. I was there last week and there is plenty of room for a small travel trailer and your vehicle. There were a at least 10 trailers on our Spanish Moss loop. We were in a slide-in truck camper but also own an R-Pod. It could have easily fit and we'd still have room for a tent. And, there were empty sites every night.

I like the tent sites because they are quieter and less expensive.

For the $30 - $40 a night you save, I'll gladly take the time to call and get sent to an open FHU space to dump my tanks. Sometimes I'm staying at a nearby CG to finish out the trip, so I don't even have to do that.
