We have seen some amazing travel deals ot the RIvviera Maya area of Mexico and are seriously considering a long weekend there in August.

I'm not as concerned about Swine Flu (I live in New York - right in the heart of all the breakouts around here), but am concerend about the drug war / violence.

Has anyone traveled there recently and do you hear / see any incidents involving US travelers to that area of Mexico?

It's such a GREAT deal right now - but am seriously concerend about the shootings, kidnappings, etc.

Thanks!

In the Mexican Riviera? Umm...no, it's perfectly safe. Been there several times, never had a problem. It's lovely.

When we stayed at the Occidental Grand Xcaret in Riviera Maya, we felt 100% safe. It is the drive from the airport TO Riviera Maya that will shock you. It is SO run down and poor. It is about a 50 minute ride. Plus our driver was speeding like a crazy maniac!
I felt bad staying at a luxury resort knowing that just down the street, people were probably wondering where their next meal would come from.

I won the trip off of a local t.v. station and it was probably the best place I have ever been to (besides Disney of course)

We didn't venture away from our resort since there was no need to. I guess I can't comment on anything other than the resort.

Good luck with your decision.

thanks!

I thought I has read that some of the border / drug war violence was spilling over into the resort areas...but I'm glad to hear so far that's not the case.

Has anyone else been recently (in the last couple months) and what did you find in terms of safety?

As for leaving the resort-area, no we definitely would stay on-site the whole time...

We've travelled extensively throughout Mexico and love it. We've made friends with people there over the years and see them every year when we go back. I'd planned to go with my kids in April this year, but they told us not to come this year. Things have been very bad. While the odds are very good that you'd be safe at your resort, I'm not an odds player, especially when traveling with my children and the people who live there telling me not to come.

I will say that my brother went to Acapulco in March when there was quite a bit of violence going on. They stayed at their resort and never heard or saw anything. I guess it all depends on how much of a risk taker you are. I will say the area is absolutely gorgeos and there are a lot of great resorts there.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks!

I don't know - i have friends that travel to the baja area that say right now "don't go." But I know Riviera Maya is in a different part of the country...

I would hate to hear they are targeting touristy areas, or that the violence is spilling ont ot he Resort properties...

Ugh - this is why they have such good deals right now...

Erm, no, the reason why they have such good deals right now is because most non scheduled European airlines have stopped flying to Mexico because of the swine flu and there are many half empty resort hotels as a consequence.
We were at El Dorado Royale recently, went to Chichen Itsa, spent an evening in Cancun. All happy and peaceful. Do you know how far the Baja is from Cancun? Nearly 3,000 miles!!

The cruises are STILL going there too...(they did stop after flu thing, but started up again)
.I am in NY also and YES, there are AMAZING pkg trips on hotwire....I just quoted, 1600. for 6 days 5 nights, hotel (my mind went blank, but it was a resort, BIG one, fogot now....and rt non stop air, great times....for 3 adult( child is a teen)...VERY tempted, but we're planning a BIG mexico trip next year for a group of us, staying in Riviera Maya actually (we're thinking the LINDO) and of course my quick getaway to the POLY in oct.
As far as safety goes......I think on THAT side of Mexico you'd be fine, I would not venture ANYWHERE out of the resort area........I would NOT travel to central Mexico right now...they ARE targeting US residents per OUR newspapers a while back.....
Good Luck with your decision.............

We had two cruise stops in Mexico in March. Of course, that was before the H1N1 thing, but the Cozumel/Playa del Carmen/Tulum stop seemed completely safe and unaffected. Farther south we stopped in Costa Maya. The vibe was definitely more tense. There were police in full gear with rifles and dogs guarding the port entrance. The bus went through a military check point along the road to the Chacchoben ruins, which our guide said was directed at drug runners. I would probably have no problem going back to the Playa del Carmen area, but I was a little unsettled in Costa Maya. These areas are almost completely dependent upon tourism and the government has a vested interest in keeping them safe.

I am a travel agent and have sent many, many people to the Riviera Maya and other areas of Mexico (DH, myself and 4 kids go every year)---and the only complaint I hear is that they had to leave to come home! It is a very safe, beautiful country and the people are so amazing and friendly!

I will tell you the same thing I tell my clients--if you go looking for trouble of course it will find you; if you don't behave badly at home then don't do it while visiting another country; behave and act accordingly; don't go to out of the way night clubs or strip bars, stick to the tourist areas; never leave your drink unattended if in a nightclub; and most of all, be respectful of the people and their culture.

If you think about it--these rules apply everywhere in the world. The media has a bad way of "blowing" instances up to be worse than what they are----the crimes that happen in our own countries can be just as bad, if not worse at times. The difference is the media doesn't label our entire country as unsafe.

I hope you go on a Mexican holiday and have a great time!

Thanks, everyone! I'm showing the resort to DBF tonight and we'll see what he thinks. It looks gorgeous! Will let you know what we decide!

Make no mistake, what is going on in Mexico ought to scare the crap ought of anyone with a working brain. In Texas, we are seeing the effects of it daily, and not just on the border. In my neighborhood, we have perhaps 60-70 homes. I know less than half the families in those homes and of those, three families have fled Mexico due to the violence and kidnappings. They wanted to stay in Mexico, because they had a sweet life there, but the constant fear for the safety of their family became too much to bear.

One family was away from home when a kidnapping attempt was made on a family member (they got an employee instead by mistake) and the family never returned home. They literally left everything they owned in their house and never returned. When they came to our neighborhood, they brought what they'd had in their suitcases while on vacation. They had to buy everything. Cars, furniture, clothes, pots and pans, you name it. You don't walk away from your home, all your worldly possessions and life without a darn good reason. They are just lucky they have the money to do it. And those 3 families are just within a few streets of me. Multiply that times our whole town and then multiply it times the whole state and you get the idea. Tons of people (those who can afford it) are gettingthehellouttaDodge. And those families are the first to admit the Mexican government is helpless against the drug cartels and kidnappers. And that's the difference between what's going on in Mexico vs. other counties, including our own. Other countries have violence and crime, but their governments, police forces, and armed services are not crippled, outgunned and overpowered by the drug cartels. Mexico is.

That being said, the Riviera Maya is probably about the safest place you can go in Mexico. It's secuded, has minimal development, only a few hotels and really too out of the way for the drug cartels to bother with. Stay around the few hotels and you should be fine. The worst violence is near the border, but yes....it is spilling on to the resort areas slowly but surely. Acapulco has had trouble for years, but it's just now getting major news coverage. Cancun gets a decent amount, but people forget that Cancun is not a sleepy little resort town anymore. It's a pretty big city and tourist town and like any tourist town in any country on earth, tourists make easy targets when they let their guard down.

IMO, it's naive to mimimize what is going on in Mexico. The rest of the US is only just beginning to hear about what we've been hearing about for years. We've learned to have a healthy "respect" and take the danger seriously. When you're dealing with people who leave heads of local officials in coolers on the steps of city buildings and alternately chunk heads into wedding receptions and such, it's a good idea to realize you're out of your league. If they have a mind to have a show of force in a major resort city, they'll do it in a heartbeat. They are beyond control of even the federal government. They don't hesitate to wipe out the entire police force in a town that tries to stand up to them. The gangs in the US look like Boy Scouts compared to them.

I used to go to Mexico almost once a year. No more. There are other great beaches in the Caribbean. But if I did go back to Mexico, I'd stick to some place like the Riviera Maya.

I've been to the Riviera Maya for the past 2 years, and am going again in 3 weeks. Never had any problems what so ever.

I too think the media has a way of stretching the truth a bit. Yes I know things happen- terrible things- in some areas. They make it sound like it is everywhere. It's like saying that all of the US is like certain areas in Detroit.

One thing that I have always been told. Be a bit careful about the airport transportation. Some will rip you off. We always book thru Apple vacations, and have never had problems since they have there own vans.

We are going to Cancun in about a month. At first we almost cancelled because of all the violence/gangs, shootings, etc. My son and his friends did cancel months ago - they were supposed to go in June.

We then almost cancelled about a month ago because of the swine flu. If we had to cancel last minute and loose airfare and our points (traded DVC almost two years ago), so be it.

If I had to choose somewhere to vacation now, I am sure I would not pick Mexico at this time. We really have no plans to leave the resort or area much, if at all. We are using the resort transfers too.

It will be just dh and I and hopefully all will be fine.

Thanks everyone...we are looking at the Fairmont Mayakoba, which seems to be right near Playa del Carmen?

Today's the last day of the "sale", so trying to make the decision asap.

The resorts looks gorgeous, and huge (so we probably wouldn't leave), but I can see how looking at some other Carribean areas might work well.

We went to Aruba two years ago and I loved it, but DBF was a bit bored.

We are looking for a place with a beach, calm turquiose waters, great food, nightly entertainment and spa services...

I have to agree with EMom. I don't think I was clear in my previous post, we have some friends aren't too far out of Cancun and the others are further down the coast, in the Costa Maya area. Both sets of friends have told us not to come this year. While there's always some issues (just as there are anywhere in the world), this year has been much worse. EMom is right about the spill over into other areas. Also, what we're seeing on our news is just the tip of the iceberg, according to them.

Chances are you'd be fine on the Mexican Rivieria, especially if you don't plan to leave your resort. The most dangerous time for you would be on the ride to and from the airport.

Do you think the travel bewtween the airport and the resort would be safer if booked thorugh a tour company, or the hotel?

As I said in my previous post "stick to the tourist areas" --there is a lot going on in Northern to Central Mexico but the south is relatively safe.

The media has labelled the entire country as not safe which is not fair as they do not do that to our own country. Crimes are just as horrible in our country--dragging people to death, torture, etc. IMHO, I just don't think its fair to mass label the entire country.

If you stay at your resort and not venture into town you should be fine. This info comes from my sister who has lived in Mexico on the coast near your destination. As a side note, she just moved back to the states after 8 years in Mex. because of the violence. There were multiple kidnappings in her gated community.

Spoke to a local travel agent. Was told the areas are getting LESS safe, even in Cancun and Riviera Maya, that REALLY distresses me. As far as Playa Del Carmen...the marketplace is lovely but now with all the issues, it too can be unsafe for evening walks and shopping so there goes that idea, I can just see it ,,,,,,go have some drinks, feel tispsy and your guard is down....so not worth it to me...And to travel to Ruins, be stopped by machine gun toting people THAT is not comforting either....been told not to leave resorts before (thinking Jamaica) and ya know what, I can spend my $$ anywhere, so safety is MUCH more important than a good deal!

If you google Mauro Tello Quinones he was Kidnapped from CANCUN while with his family, a retired General who went there to HELP Mexico...ya know what....it is just very very sad......
ooks like we are rethinking our BIG Mexico trip until we have some sort of comfort feel again..I think that may be FAR later than sooner though, sad! :sad1:
