We're driving from PA to FL - I am thinking a travel potty may be a good idea (kids are 8, 6 and 3). Anyone have any experience? Are they worth buying?

We always have one in the car. When DS was being potty trained we even carried it in the parks because he was afraid of the big potties. ;)

Here is the one we have: http://www.diapers.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?productId=6667. This one might be a little small for your older ones, but would probably work in an emergency.

My sister has a nice one that folds up into a case that is bigger than the one I have, that might be a good choice, too.

I have a potty seat that sets on top of a big-sized potty. It is a little flimsy and I doube (weight wise) would work for your older kids. DS loves it becuase: 1. It's Elmo and 2. He can use a "big" potty without falling through. I love it becuas it fits in a diaper bag and it allows him to potty "virtually" anywhere (fits better on some potties than others. Here's a link: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2304657

I have both a little folding potty and a folding potty seat from One Step Ahead. The potty is good to have in the car for emergencies, and trips to the park etc. We used the potty seat more for everyday trips to the mall, Disney etc. The potty is great but DD was probably 5 the last time she used it---it is pretty small. The good thing is it's set up with a plastic bag with a pad inside, so you just "go" into the bag, on the pad and then throw the whole thing away. Great for little kids, but I don't think it would work for your older ones.

I always throw the little potty that my kids potty trained on in the car for long trips. If you have one of those, I'd bring that. No need to buy a special travel one. It was a lifesaver on our very first trip with our oldest who was 3 at the time. We were stuck in bumper to bumper traffic in a construction zone going through Virginia with cement barriers on both sides of us when my 3 year old developed a horrible case of diarrhea. There was NO way to get out of the traffic and it wasn't moving. Thank goodness we had the potty!

I just line the inside with a plastic bag and fold a diaper inside out so the absorbent part is face up to absorb any liquid. After it is used, I just pull out the plastic bag and everything stays contained. No messy clean up.

We bought a potette from Amazon and it's been a LIFESAVER with our 3 year old. It's wonderful and takes up very little room when folded.

We always have a regular little potty in our van along with a supply of trash bags, cheap diapers and a box of tissues. We line the potty with a trash bag and open up one of the diapers and put it in the bottom. All three of my big kids can go and then I tie it up and throw it away. It has been a life saver!!!

I also keep a little thing of soap and large bottle of water so we can wash hands.

I had a travel potty seat that folded up for the toilet itself. I also had a blow up potty that I would take in the car or on the boat, or even the neighborhood park, for when I ran into the situation where a bathroom wasn't available. You used small kitchen garbage bags in it and then could just tie them up and throw them out. It worked great and was easy to transport since it had a little carrying pouch and took only seconds to blow up. Of course this was 9 years ago so I have no idea if you can get them anymore, but if I remember correctly, I got it from One Step Ahead.

Our travel potty came in really handy many times when the kids were little. Here is a little sound advice. ALWAYS check to make sure there isn't any cracks in the bowl:eek:. Unfortunately we had to discover this one the hard way.:scared1:
