Heading to WDW at the end of August. Bringing a friend of our son's with us this time. He has a passport and we will have documentantion from his folks that he is allowed to travel with us.

However, not sure how to handle travel/health insurance. For those who have brought friends of kids, what did you do?

I don't believe I can add him to any insurance I buy because he is not family. I guess his folks will need to purchase insurance for him, but can I get mine and my wife's names added as guardians so we can help him out in case he gets sick while down there?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

He definitely needs his own health insurance. If his parents have extended health through their employers he would likely have travel health coverage through that. You would just need his card or the information. We have this, but always buy supplementary health travel insurance (can't have too much coverage down there;)) so they may want to that. He definitely can't go on yours though.

As to the second part of the question, I don't know. I imagine you would need a letter from his parents similar to the one you have for him to travel with you authorizing you to make care decisions for him in a medical emergency. I don't think adding your names to the policy as guardians would make a difference as the insurance is only the method of payment for any treatment and doesn't concern care decisions.

Thanks for the help. We will be chatting with his folks this week. Both boys are 17 so not sure all info/questions are getting to his folks in a timely manner.

You may want to talk to his parents yourself. I have a teenager and know they forget to relay messages  We have extended health, but always get travel insur. thru BCAA too. His parents will have to take out some for him, I wouldn't want to rely soley on extended health. Good luck, two 17 yr old boys, you are brave!
