Hi everyone!

Our first family trip to WDW is next month and I just realized we don't have travel insurance (ie. if one of us needs medical attention etc.) or at least I don't think we have travel insurance?

Does everyone here buy it when travelling outside of Canada?

Where do you buy it?

Sorry, it's my first trip travelling anywhere, so I'm a big novice at this type of stuff.

TIA for your replys!

RBC, CAA, Presidents Choice, insuremytrip.com etc!! Good thing you thought of it. You should never ever cross the border without insurance....ever.

Thanks Canadamom for the website!

The lowest quote I got was for $96.00. And I will have add rental car insurance which is $75.00, so the total will be $171.00 for my trip.

Is $171.00 approx. the right price I should be paying for travel insurance...I have no clue!

I usually pay anywhere between $30- 50 per adult for the trip- a week.

Usually the banks have good rates and good products!

Beware of insurance comapnies you haven't heard of, stick with blue cross, RBC, CIBC etc.

Banks and CAA are usually good options for insurance.

As to car insurance, rather than getting separate insurance, you may want to look at getting a 'rider' for your own insurance policy. Usually they are between 30-50$ for an entire year, and then cover any car you drive.

Legend_073, we are going for 8 days in March and paid $148 for four of us. This included trip cancellation at 100%, trip interruption at 150%, more luggage coverage than we would need, and medical (also don't really need due to my husband's work coverage). When I compared it to other places (bank, AMA, insuremytrip, etc.) it was $100 less than the cheapest cancellation insurance. I also called the insuring company listed and talked to someone there about whether they insure Canadians, whether the website was legit, etc. I also printed off the fine print, certificate, etc. so I know what I am covered for. As far as car rental goes, our family doesn't need it as our car insurance carries over from what we have here. We have "SEF 27" endorsement added onto our policy and our insurance company just writes a letter for us to take saying that we are covered. You might want to check...might save you some money.

I buy emergency medical from CAA. I have paid around $60 for a family of 4 travelling for 9 days. They also offer a very reasonable policy that covers you for a full year. It costs less to take the 1 year policy than to buy seperate coverage for 2 trips.

That $60 is as a non-member. I am now a member so I expect to pay less this year. My guess is about 20% less.

Make sure you cover yourself until midnight of the day you return to Canada.

I just realized I had bought travel insurance with my flight tickets...it's definitely a learning process...I'll be a pro at all this planning for my next trip :)

Thanks again for all your replys!

Through my BOM Mosaik mastercard I pay $99.00 a year for everything, this gives me and my family unlimited trips up to 31 days at a time, and covers all our health, rental car, trip cancellation and interruption, etc. I have never been able to get a better rate than this anywhere. It just renews yearly on my mastercard.

I used it when Transmeridian went bankrupt and received my cheque in about 4 weeks after the bankruptcy.

My DH had to use it when he went to the emergency dept at the hospital on Sand Lake Rd. and had no problems with the hospital billing the insurance directly. Without the insurance this trip to the hospital just for unblocking his ears would have cost us $739.00 US, the insurance co. sent us a copy of the hospital bills.

i paid $620 from rbc for our 10 day trip coming in april...it includes medical and trip cancellation....i found it to quite high..2 adults and 2 teens

Has anyone used President's Choice Travel/Medical Insurance? I am considering them. They are not cheap (around $250 for family of 3 for 2 weeks of travel for their premium all coverage plan), but the Disney Cruise Lines' insurance is $267 for 3 people for only 1 week, so I figure the PC one is better since we will be in Orlando 7 days prior to cruise. They also offer car rental insurance for and additional $9/day. I am thinking the $9/day is worth it since if we get into an accident it won't affect our own car insurance (I think).

Once again - this coverage covers the damage to the rental car.. and there is some basic coverage for liability included with the rental .. but its not very high.

From the PC Site:
* up to $50,000 for loss or damage of your rental car due to collision/theft
* for trips up to 60 days

The coverage you're talking about does not cover 3rd party liability generally speaking... (the damage to other people's property or person) That could be extensive and it's NOT covered by most credit card protections or by policies like those from PC Financial Travel Insurance.

In some states, the minimum amount of property damage coverage required by law (and therefore what is included with your rental car) is very low.. as low as $10,000. In fact, that IS the minimum in the state of Florida and that IS what car rental companies in Florida include with their rentals. That is woefully inadequate.

Further, Body Injury Liability is totally optional in the state of Florida and in almost all cases IS NOT be included with your rental. Check with your rental car company for details.

NO credit card program that I am aware of offers 'Body Injury Liability' coverage for third parties injured by your driving. Nor does it offer Property Damage Liability for other parties.
[EDIT: Even the American Express Platinum Card only extends coverage to the rental vehicle itself -- nothing else.]

Obviously, even an accident where nobody is seriously injured could easily exceed that coverage. If you are deemed at fault and the other party has to go to the hospital even overnight, you're looking at being on the hook for as much as $15,000 in emergency care costs and probably some loss of income, pain and suffering and god knows what else. NONE of which would be covered by PC Financial's insurance or a credit card's coverage.

You should talk to your insurance agent about what happens if you get in an accident and someone sues you for a half a million dollars. They can provide the best answers...

I have full coverage.. with million dollar liability AND the full rental car coverage from State Farm. My deductible is 250$. At 25$ a day for the loss-damage waiver at the rental car counter, I'm better off financially to gamble that if I'm in an accident it will exceed 250$ in damage and just use my insurance. Have you been to a body-shop recently? You can't break a tail-light for 250$ these days.

If I REALLY wanted to protect my own coverage from an accident claim, I would use get the Collision Damage Waiver (roughly 25$ a day) from the rental company / or use the Credit Card coverage for the CDW.. and the Extra Liability Protection (between 12 and 15$ a day) from the rental company. Obviously that would easily double the cost of the rental or more... That's not worth it in my opinion.

The rental car coverage option from State Farm was 25$ for a full year... not per trip... it's more coverage and it's less money. In my case, it covers the car AND all third party liability to property OR personal injury.

If you currently do not have ANY liability insurance, to protect your assets & future income from a claim by a third party, you should absolutely purchase the Extended Protection from the rental car company and either consider the Collision damage waiver or find a credit card that will cover the rental vehicle itself.

Yikes, Melouche, that does sound a bit high! Check the fine print. If you purchased the insurance less than 15 days ago, you might be able to get out of it. I noticed that on the policy I purchased.

For straight up medical coverage..check with your employer. Lots of employers offer this coverage thru your health plans at work.

For trip interruption coverage.. there are lots of options but not all are equal. Be sure to read the fine print on each one to see what's covered and what is not covered.

As for the bit about including the rental car coverage.. please see this post below.. this ONLY covers the actual car you rent... that's IT.

It is good to see that everyone is in agreement to buy travel insurance. If you need any more incentive, imagine a medical emergency in the US (or anywhere for that matter) without it. My mother passed away on a trip in the US 10 years ago and if my parents had not had insurance, the worst 8 hours of our lives (her hospitalization and ultimate passing) would have cost us over $20,000 US. We got the bill from the hospital and sent it directly to CAA.

TD Meloche Monnex offers insurance. For the price of what you pay for almost everyone else, it covers you for everything (health, trip cancel, lost luggage etc) and it's good for an entire year as long as you haven't put any claims thru. So even if you cross-border shop you'd be covered. If you happen to have house insurance with them, then the amount is crazy cheap. Also do check your house insurance, if thru someone else.

Good Luck:cool1:
