Have any of you used travel insurance coverage you had via a credit card? DH and I just booked a tour (non-Disney) and charged it to our Reserve card. Looking at the CC benefits and comparing to purchased travel insurance (via InsureMyTrip.com), it seems as though the coverage is just as good as what we would buy, with the exception of not having "cancel for any reason" coverage.

Anyone with experience, good or bad, using CC-related travel insurance?

The Chase Reserve card is pretty good but there are some holes. For example, there is no coverage for pre-existing conditions. If you buy trip insurance from an insurance company, they will usually waive the ban on pre-existing conditions if you buy the insurance right away.
I look at the credit card insurance as going "self-insured" but with a chance that the card benefits might help in certain situations.
For our ABD trip, I ended up buying the trip insurance policy from Disney because of these holes. But on normal small trips, I don't.

Also, neither trip insurance nor Chase will cover your losses if your tour operator cancels the trip. You would have to look to the tour operator to get your money back, cover air fare, etc.

Also, see this site to see discussion from people who have made claims to Chase with more or less success. https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cha...ellation-delay-insurance-issues-comments.html

I would encourage you to download and read the benefits guide for exact specifications of what is covered and what is not. Generally speaking, the insurance on your credit card is a reimbursement insurance while separate travel/trip insurance covers you for quite a bit more. i.e. you paid $2500 for your tour so they will reimburse you up to $2500 and that's the end of it. Alternatively, the separate policy will reimburse you money if your bags are delayed over a certain number of days, covers cost for emergency medical evacuation and some even cover the cost of return airfare for certain events such as the death of an immediate family member. All of this specific info would be found in the benefits guide which does usually take a little digging on the website to find and download.

Thanks to both of you. (I'm going to start following the flyertalk forums!) We have the new Chase Sapphire Reserve card, and per the benefits guide it covers trip cancellation, interruption, delays, lost luggage, baggage delays, etc. with maximum reimbursements and definitions that are the same as the travel insurance we're looking at. (Reading it is just like reading the travel insurance specifics.) We called them to clarify the definition of "pre-existing condition" in relation to our own medical histories, and it appears we're covered there too. So - we have a few more days to think about it, but I think we're going to save the significant cost of purchasing travel insurance. Appreciate the input!

Was wondering, not to intentionally hijack this thread, are your points covered if you pay your maintenance fees using the sapphire?

Yes! We paid our DVC and other timeshare dues with the Sapphire Reserve card and received triple points on all! We love this card - it's great for people who travel (and eat out) regularly.

When I replied I thought you were asking about getting triple points for paying maintenance fees with the Sapphire card, and you do.

I would doubt it, but I am sure someone will try it before long.

But now in light of @miTnosnhoJ'S response I'm afraid I misunderstood @suebeelin. If the question was whether paying dues with the Sapphire card would provide trip insurance for DVC points reservations, I don't think so.

OP here - Thought I would add a new post to my thread, because it seems a lot of folks on this board use the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and might be interested in our experience with filing a trip-cancellation claim with them. (The trip did not have anything to do with DVC at all, and no DVC points were involved.)

We used the Chase Sapphire Reserve card to pay for a group tour sponsored by my university alumni office. After detailed comparisons of the travel insurance coverage (exclusions, trip cancellation/interruption, lost luggage, delay, accident, emergency medical, etc.) provided by the card itself with what we could purchase, we felt that the only area in which the CC-provided coverage was inadequate was in the maximum it would pay in case we incurred medical expenses while on the tour. We also found out that we could buy a separate policy very inexpensively from another source to cover just medical expenses but with significantly higher maximum coverage than Chase provided. So that's what we did - bought specific medical coverage for ourselves from the other source and relied on the Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits for the rest.

Well, to make a long story short, we had to cancel our trip because our adult son now requires major heart surgery, and the earliest date it could be scheduled fell during the tour. We called the number in the CC benefits booklet to notify them of the cancellation and received forms to complete and submit electronically along with copies of various documents. Our claim was approved and paid about ten days after we submitted everything, so needless to say, we're very happy. We were able to cancel the medical coverage outright and receive a full refund of the premium.

In future we'll do the same thing - compare in detail the coverage that's available at no cost through the CC with the coverage we could buy from other sources before deciding what to do. This is just another reason we like the Chase Sapphire Reserve card so much!
