I've never purchased from a third party before, so this may seem like a silly question to some. I elected not to get the insurance through DCL because it only covered the cruise. I booked airfare and will book hotel prior to cruise separate.

When asked for the cost of your trip, do you just estimate?

I mean I know what the cruise, airfare and hotel cost - but there are other items that I'm not sure of yet like food and beverage, transportation (probably using DCL ground transportation, but may not), port excursions, etc.

I just use the actual cost of the airfare, cruise, hotel (if staying in one) in my "Cost of trip". Usually rounded up to an even number.

The DCL transfers would be part of the cruise costs. As would excursions. If you want to include those, you'll have to estimate the final cost.

Remember too, you only need to include items that are pre-paid but non-refundable. Anything you don't pay until you go doesn't need to go in, nor do things that you pay, but can be cancelled without cost.

Also, if you add other things later (like excursions or transportation) you can contact the insurance company and add them in later, and they will adjust the cost of the insurance accordingly.

I do an estimation- if something is not refundable. And round up and contact the insurer if you add something you would like covered, as other posters have mentioned.

We estimate. When you're doing the online quotes...put in your estimation...then play around with the totals. You can get varying $ amounts of coverage for the same cost to you--try to maximize that--or see if lowering your estimation a little puts you into a lower cost bracket. A lot of insurance companies do free insurance for kids under 18yrs with paying adults--so if you have kids, make sure you're choosing one of those insurance companies.

Yep.

Yep!

So food and beverage wouldn't go into the trip insurance, because you wouldn't buy the until you're on the trip. It's not non-refundable. DCL transfers can be refunded as far as I know; you can buy the transfers shortly before using them, so if you were really nervous you could buy them later. Port Adventures are paid once you're on the cruise (for Disney, at least), so the ones beyond day 1 can definitely be cancelled. Not sure about day 1 stuff. But I don't think they HAVE day 1 port adventures?

Excursions must be cancelled prior to 3 days before start of cruise, or you get changed for it. Unless, of course, DCL can "resell" you spot from a wait list onboard.

This was our understanding of DCL's rules. Even though the charge doesn't appear until after you are on board, the information seems to say that you must cancel 3 days before sailing. No idea if they would really hold you to this or not, but in our case a last minute (even last day) cancellation was a real possibility, so we didn't want to be charged for the (large number of) DCL excursions we had booked if we had to cancel less than three days before sailing, so we went ahead and insured them. Maybe we didn't have to, but we read it the same way @PrincessShmoo did and didn't want to take that chance. For most people perhaps it is a minor risk that won't even come up.

Yes DCL Transfers are refundable. Our transfers were refunded last year when we had to cancel them due to Irma.
