Can anyone tell me the best and least expensive way to go from Boardwalk to Universal Studios for the day?

It depends on how many people in your party.

Mears has a scheduled/shared service from the Disney resorts for $16 PP.

Many towncar companies will provide private RT service for $75 - $80 per car.

There are rental cars that can be rented on Disney property for as little as $40 for a 24 hours rental.

There are also on-demand taxis. Probably about $30 each way.
