Transportation problems at FW Cabins

Fore those who have stayed at FW Cabins, is it true that it is easier to travel to the parks with my own car than to use the buses? I have heard that the bus service at FW can be slow.

We have done both. The bus system is not as bad as people make it out to be. We prefer the Boat to MK and we drive to the other parks. My son is still young so it is nice to drive right up to the cabin and carry him to bed. When we were with out kids....we would have a few drinks at Epcot or DD and take the bus. No need to drive!!!!

We stay in the Fort Wilderness campsites, but I think the answer should be the same. . . We like to drive to the parks. We like to get there for rope drop and it's easier for us to time it right if we're driving. I have taken the buses when we've left the parks at different times or if I'm going with just one of the kids and leaving the car with DH, and while the buses aren't as quick as driving, they're usually pretty reliable. But sometimes they're crowded and you have to stand or, even worse, wait another 20 minutes or so for the next bus. Also, on the way home the buses always stop at Wilderness Lodge first, which adds a little bit of time to the trip. The only park to which it might be quicker to take Disney transportation is the Magic Kingdom (by boat), but we usually drive there, too.

Its all in the timing . Sometimes your lucky sometimes your not . I havent noticed a difference in bus transportation to the parks at the Fort than at other resorts weve stayed at .

We found we preferred driving our own cars - It was nice to be in control over our movement and taking the trams from the parking lots was easy and quicker then any bus we experienced on a previous trip. MK we did take the boat of course.

Have fun at the Cabins

I think depends it on the person and the time of year. We have had to wait forever it felt like for a bus but, it hasn't happened often. I don't mind the wait and normally go during the slower times. We always use disney transportation to the parks and Golf cart within the Fort. I have made it from walking up to the bus stop at EPCOT to the camper door in 15 mins. Is this normal,,,,nnnoooo,,,sometimes its luck of the draw, if you walk up as the bus is pulling out and miss it, you could be there awhile.I haven't heard anything in a while but, I thought there were doing something different with the busses so that if a resort loading area had alot of people the y would have a bus there. It is a little annoying to see 3 Grand Floridian busses stop and pick up 0-3 people back to back and we had a busload patiently waiting.
I just wouldn't want to drive myself. Now with the class A I don't have the option but, we had a 5er for a while and could have.I think you should try them both and see what works for you...:thumbsup2

I have talked at some length about my affinity for leaving the drivin to Disney, so I won't recount it here. For me it boils down to, "you're on vacation -- if you're in a big hurry, you're doing it wrong". It's a sermon I still have to preach to myself.

The last time we went to DW we stayed at the All Stars. While the transportation was okay, it seemed to take forever to get anywhere. It was worse getting a bus back to All Stars from DTD. After staying so far away from the action, it would take some really bad issues for FT Wilderness buses to worse.

Having said all that.. I like using Disney transportation. It's all part of the experience, IMO. :)

Part of it is that at the cabins it is easier to drive than it is at the other hotels. You can park right outside your cabin, you don't have to park and then schlep through the whole hotel to your room.

The bus system at the Fort is great! I especially love taking the boat to MK in the morning!

The buses can be very slow. When it comes to transportation to the MK it is just as quick to walk down to Pioneer Hall to catch the boat as it is to catch the bus of course this is all based on timming.

I think the Fort should bring back the old trams.

For us, we're more than happy to sit back and let Disney do the driving. But, we always get a golf cart. What I don't know is whether we would change that plan if we didn't have a cart.

Have fun!

That might be true if you are staying in loops between the Meadow and the marina, but sure isn't the case if you're further away (i.e. the other HALF of the campground! LOL). Even then I think the odds are pretty good if walking from 600, 800 or 1400 that you'll be passed by a bus as you walk.

Dh & I walked to the buses & the ferry. It took us 20 minutes to walk to the ferry & 10 minutes to walk to the buses. We never waited more than 5 minutes once we got to the bus stop or the dock.

How much is parking at MK these days?

If you are a Disney resort guest it is FREE!!!

However, MK is the one place you DO want to use Disney transportation as for resort guests it drops you right near the MK gates.

If you drive to the MK parking lot, then you have to take a monorail or ferry to get to the Magic Kingdom.

I use Disney transportation for EVERYTHING, but then I love the transportation system!!

It is $12 per day for non-resort guests in cars. That pass is usable in any park during the day of purchase.

I'm in the "let Disney do the driving" camp. We park our truck and it doesn't move again. We feel we're on vacation so what's the rush. Staying at FW should be relaxed anyway...not rushing to get someplace. Yes, sometimes the bus (we take boat to MK) is slower, but we just sit and enjoy the ride. We also look at it, the reason the rates are so high to FW is because it includes the transportation to the parks...need to make use of that perk. ;) We have never driven to the parks, but the traffic and roads seem very confusing and at the end of a hot day at the parks, getting in a hot vehicle (vs. A/C bus) just never appealed. Plan your time for going and coming and it works out fine.
