Transportation London to Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral

I am going to London in Sept and I want to go to Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral for the HP film locations and I was wondering what the best option would be to get to these locations from London? Thanks

East Coast mainline from London Kings Cross for Durham and to Newcastle or Morpeth for Alnwick then bus from bus station in either Newcastle or Morpeth. 1 hour from Newcastle about 30 mins from Morpeth.

Bear in mind that you will have a 3 (or more) hour train journey from London to Newcastle/Durham before you add on the bus journey at the other end.

Yeah I am trying to figure out if this is doable. I have considered flying to Edinburgh then driving back down to Alnwick castle then back down to London.
