Hello,
I am travelling to London for the first time in Sept. I am trying to figure out how to do this plan. One day we are going to get up early and take a train to Windsor Castle from London (close to the London Eye). Then take a train to Picket Close in Berkshire (Martin's Heron - HP location). Then we want to figure out transportation to Lacock Abbey (HP locations) then to Oxford University, Then back to london. Anyone have any tips on transportation for doing this. I typed them all individually in google but not sure if they are the best ones.

I can help with the Windsor one. By the London eye is London Waterloo station, you get on a train there straight through to Windsor & Eton Riverside.

I know that you can get to Oxford from London Paddington or from Windsor central to Slough and then Slough to Oxford - train.

Martins Heron is near Ascot and can also be reached from London Waterloo. But if you go from Windsor you need to get the train from Windsor & Eton Riverside to Staines and then Staines to Martin's Heron.

Good luck

Tina

You can get coaches from London to Oxford. Either the Oxford tube or the Oxford bus company have London buses which is cheaper than the train:thumbsup2

The only issue with buses would be the time it takes since we want to do all of these places in a day time is def important. I would rent a car if I could cheap enough. And just to make sure by train I mean tube lol.

The tube refers to the Underground system. To get to the places you mention you will need to use mainline trains not the tube.

The only way I can see you doing this in a day is to rent a car.

Even then you wouldn't get to see much of Windsor Castle.

None of these places are in London. Lacock is out near Bristol which can be 3 hour drive each way. And a train won't go there from London I doubt. You'd probably have to go London - Bristol and then back out again. Or maybe to Chippenham from London (maybe 1.5) hours and then get a bus or something?

I know the UK is little but we're not that little. ;)

You really aren't going to be able to do this in a day by train and then get back into London. Even if you hire a car you would be pushing it on time. Windsor alone is going to take you a few hours if you want to go around the Castle etc..that really is a day out in itself from London. Oxford is another day out. You may need to rethink your plans a bit on this one. As a PP said, yes we are a small country but not that small. :)

Yeah I was wondering if it was too much as well. We only have a few days in London so I was trying to figure the best way to go about it all. I may have to consider dropping Lacock. Berkshire location is by Windsor castle so that one will be easy. Then there would just be Oxford. I had wanted to go to Lacock for the HP filming locations cause I am a huge HP fan.

You will still be much much better getting a car to go and see the house in Bracknell.

Windsor isn't too far from Bracknell but there isn't a direct train link from Windsor to Martins Heron. (One of my best friends from Uni lives a couple of houses along from the HP one) so I know from visiting.

You'll be wasting a lot of time waiting for local trains or buses for what will be a 5 minute visit to a house that you wont be allowed in etc. Well over 2 extra hours out of a day of a big trip. Seems a shame to lose time in a great city like London, Oxford or Windsor to visit a residential street.

At least if you have a car you can put the exact house in your SatNav and it'll get you there in 20 minutes or so.

Might be worth you renting a car from Windsor to Oxford as you could adapt the route and go via Bracknell to see the HP house.

So take a train to Windsor and rent the car there you mean? Any recommendations on cheap rental companies lol?

I agree with the PP, its a long time to take out of your day just to visit a very normal house in Berkshire when all you will see is what you can see in a photo! But hey if you are that big a fan then I understand why. I would have picked you up in Windsor and taken you myself but it looks like we cross mid air in the Atlantic!!!! :)

Maybe you could get a train from Windsor Riverside to Bracknell and then catch a taxi to the location..

Just wanted to bump this as I saw photos on a friends facebook over the weekend.

Did you know that have the Privet Drive house there on the tour?

Will save you that whole trip to Bracknell and certainly make your time easier to divide. :)
