Transplant recipient declared brain dead

That is so sad :( My prayers are with her family at this time.

I am so angry about this!! How could this happen, this is not some unimportant little detail, these people are dealing with live organs and there were 2 hearts and lungs that went to "waste" because of a mistake. Poor Jesica and her family. :( My prayers have been with them. But someone has to pay, and pay dearly for this. Imagine if you were the family of someone with Type A blood on the waiting list. It's just wrong!!!!

Such a terrible story. That poor family came here expecting a miracle and instead are living a nightmare.

My stomach feels sick right now over reading that news. This is a young girl that didn't even have a chance to experience life. I am so sad and makes me look at the little things I complain about as trivial:(

This is so sad. I am very sorry for her family

You know Cathy, as a nurse, the nasty tone of your post really p***** me off. Do you actually think for one minute that anyone did this on purpose???????????? Do you think for one minute that all of the people involved in this tragedy don't feel terrible????

Well, I have news for you and everybody else...healthcare professionals are HUMAN and as HUMANS we make mistakes. Sometimes the mistakes have tragic consequences, as in this case. It is a tragedy, no one is denying that it is a tragedy, no one is trying not to take responsibility for the tragedy.

I am sorry you think that the whole medical profesion sucks because of this one instance of a grave HUMAN error with tragic results. As a nurse, I feel terrible for the family of this poor little girl, whether she was here illegally and taking advantage of our healthcare system or not. The bottom line is, we really do do our best to make sure things like this don't happen, but unfortunately they do. at times, and it's terrible when they do, and we can learn from it and try our best tomake sure it doesn't happen again.

I would never encourage anyone to go into medicine these days, because of the attitudes of the public, much like the one you exhibit.

You people think there's a shortage of healthcare professionals now...wait a few years.Who wants to work in such a thankless profession???? I mean, think of all the fun we have...working evenings, weekends, holidays, being exposed to contagious diseases and inconsiderate people who think our main purpose is to wait on them hand and foot. And when a mistake is made, well, gee, then we also get handed a load of disrespect on top of al the other fun!!!!!!!!

By the way, for this one tragic loss, there were probably 5000 "saves" by medical people, but will we hear about them...doubt it. It's much easier to lambaste a whole profession.

I feel sad for the family as well. However, I am QUITE disappopinted that they refused to donate any of her organs.

As I menioned on another post, from what I undestand, skin grafts from the back can help burn victims. I think anything that can be used, should be. (JUST MY OPINION). I know we don't need it when we go to the pearly gates :)

I am also saying that because of an error.....yes....a big big error....one young girl that may of had a good life has died.....yes there are mistakes every day that go unnoticed and YES there are good things that happen each day that go unnoticed.....but the bottom line is this girl is dead......I also think I remember hearing that most of her organs were gone too because of the problems....her kidneys were already damaged ...and other vital ones were bad too.....I hope and pray that the medical community through out will learn because of this one terrible error.......

Disney Doll, do you mind not putting words in my mouth?

I didn't see anywhere where I said the entire medical profession sucks or is inept, so if you are going to dispute my words, get them right first!

We are talking about life and death and frankly if Jesica was my daughter or I had a child on the waitlist, I WOULD BE PISSED OFF! That is not a mistake that should be made in a transplant case and I'm sorry that you don't like it, but I am ANGRY! Organ transplants are wonderful things, giving people new life, but to waste vital organs like that pisses ME off!

I just heard on the news that Jesica has died. :(

I am not sure if the organs would be useable. Wouldnt they be severely damaged at this point? I'm not sure.

I just heard she was taken off life support, and has died. Tragic! And what a slow, suffering death too!

Actually I think WCathyC and DisneyDoll both make good points.

Its a mistake that shouldnt have happened, and if I was on the list I'd be mad, not to mention worried- worried that someone would make a mistake like that with ME!

Also, yes, the medical profession is a hard profession. The errors happen due to people being overworked, job cutbacks, rushes to make money, and so forth. It has problems, but yes, many people in the field save many lives. But still, this girl's death shouldnt of happened.

I used to work in a hospital lab, which included blood bank. If you give the wrong blood type to a patient, a transfusion can possibly kill them. I was terrified when I had to work blood bank! If you make a mistake, you can kill somebody! In typing blood or organs, there is ALWAYS supposed to be double checking, and my lab did that. I cant imagine how the person who did Jesica's typing must feel. Burt someone should have checked it out.

They just said on one of the nes channels (MSNBC, CNN, or FOX) that there actually was a possibility that the heart/lungs from the 2nd transplant could have been used (slim, but still a chance) because they were working in her body.

I worked in the healthcare field for many years--in the clinical aspect as well as admistration. People do make mistake but but this should not have been made. The are supposed to check and recheck this info. It is their job to make sure all tissue and blood type match the recepient.
This is just a senseless tragedy, it should not have happened. That little girl had her whole life in front of her. I cannot imagine the anguish her family is having to go through.
I just felt once she got the organs with the blood type she was going to be okay. My heart just sake when I saw this post.

No matter what you think of the parents, that little girl didn't deserve that. What a senseless, terrible tragedy.

My thoughts and prayers are with the FAMILIES during this tragic time. It is a sad story and unfortunately accidents do happen. I was also surprised to hear that her parents refused to donate any of her organs.

Everyone should remember that in order for her to get a second chance at surgery another family had to make the painful decision to have their child's organs donated. I'm sure that family is also grieving for the loss of their loved one.

I was praying so hard for her over the past few days that to be honest when I read this news at first, I shed a few tears. It's SO sad and so disappointing.

Sure, helath care workers are Over-worked, but STILL SOMEBODY Could have Checked to MAKE SURE the blood type was right! I feel VERY sorry for this family, even though they are NOT from this Country, they Came here Hoping thier Daughter could be saved......America Failed them.:( :(
