Transitions lenses

Anyone care to tell me how well Transitions lenses work these days? I has a pair many (over 20) years ago and wasn't thrilled with how dark they got. As in not dark enough to make me happy. Are they better now? How quickly do they change back when you walk inside?

Currently have a pair of those and they work fine. They turn darker (like sunglasses) when outdoors in bright sunlight. They turn back to clear when you are indoors. I like the idea of not needing a separate pair of sunglasses and not having to switch back and forth.

I also find that the transitions lenses don't get as dark as I'd like. That said, they seem to be better now. There are 2 different color offerings and I always ask for whichever one gets darker. I've noticed it seems to take longer for the dark to go away once inside, however.

DH gets new ones every year. They are better now than when he started wearing them. Different color lenses seem to get darker outside. His last couple pair of glasses turn lighter inside much quicker now. I hated them when they took forever to turn back into glasses.

We get his glasses at Costco and they have samples of all the transition colors and hold them under a light to show how they look in the sun.

I like them and I've been wearing them for 20+ years but they aren't for everyone. Going inside from outdoors is hard, they don't transition quickly and I end up taking them off sometimes which leaves me almost blind until the lenses lighten since everything more than 2 feet away from me is a blur without glasses, and they don't transition while driving. They get plenty dark in bright sunlight, but the level of tint seems to be based on how sunny it is, on cloudy days my lenses only get a little bit gray. The good outweighs the bad in my opinion.

Thanks for asking that question. I've been toying with getting transition lenses for awhile now. Still haven't decided but always like hearing someone else's opinion that are/have used them.

lol, I want to add that I live in PA where we only average something like 80 sunny days per year so take that into account while reading my response 🤣 The transition time might be more problematic for people who live in sunny areas

I had them and hated them. They never got dark enough outside so I ended up having to wear sunglasses over them like a crazy person. And they stayed too dark inside that I had to remove them.

I don't have but I'll share the experience of my mom who had and recently switched to separate sunglasses. When in the car, they would not transition. Something about the way the windshield glass was and the blocking. So she was always sun blinded in the car. So that is the main reason why she went to separate pairs. It isn't horrible for her. Her purse is big enough she just keeps her sunglasses in there to switch, or if she's going out when she knows she won't need sunglasses she just leaves them at home.

They are good, but for driving you will need separate sunglasses. My sons have worn transitions lenses forever. We get then at Costco. Great prices there.

well, that's important to know. Others have the same experience?

I can also add this to be true - the Windshield Sun Protection negates the transitional effect in the car. Very annoy tbh ...

Yes, when traveling in a vehicle the glass in the windshield prevents the darkening process. I have separate sunglasses for when I'm going to be driving or if I know I'm going to be out in the sun all day. But, if just riding in a car or only being outdoors (minimal sun) I'll just keep my transitions glasses on.

I feel like mine do transition in the car. I have pretty sensitive eyes and don't drive well without some sort of sunglasses and mine definitely "transition" in the car. Are they as dark as my old Maui Jim's? No, but they work well enough. I never wore them 20 years ago, so I can't say if they are better, but they do transition pretty quickly both ways. Now I have a pair I ordered online and I don't think they transition to dark as fast as the ones I ordered from my doctor's office. Not sure what the difference might be.

I have a set of the drivewear transitions for the car. Those are polarized and start out dark and change to different shades depending on the conditions outside. They work really well.
I don’t wear glasses all the time though.

I don't think that's what I have but good to know they have them. I may check those out.

I have my eye appointment over the weekend and want to try transition lenses again - I am hopeful there are better options for driving available now versus a few years ago!

so these are never clear but they are optimized for driving?
