Transition lenses

DH, DS (age 8) and I all have them. If I am going to be outside for a long time, or if I am driving, I switch to my prescription sunglasses, because they don't seem to get quite dark enough for my comfort on those things. But if I am just walking between buildings or whatever, they are fine. I have not had a problem with them staying dark for too long indoors. DH and DS love theirs and do not have separate pairs of prescription sunglasses. They said the transitions are dark enough for them. DS especially loves his, and it is nice to know that he automatically has his sunglasses on when he's outdoors. I suppose you could get them and then get a pair of clip-on sunglasses for driving if they are not dark enough for you.

My DH and I both got them in January and were really hopeful we'd love them--well we really didn't love them. We found that they took a long time to change back to clear when coming inside during cold weather. We also found that they would slightly transition outside on very gray, cloudy days, when you really didn't want or need any sunglass effect. Ultimately, I couldn't stand the fact that flourescent lights at work were enough to make my glasses just a tad gray and I felt like they made me look old. They also never got dark enough outside to provide useful sun protection. Ultimately we returned both sets of our glasses to our eye doctor and getting new lenses put in. I ended up buying fit over frames sunglasses from QVC which are great. $40--with shipping and tax. My transition coating was about $70 on my lenses.

My husband and youngest daughter have had them forever. My oldest daughter didn't want them, but I showed her the pictures from the last year... Disney, bluebonnets, vacation, Girl Scouts, etc. and her eyes are either squinting, she's shading her eyes with her hand, or her eyes are closed. Ugggh, not a good outdoor picture for an entire year. I made her get transitions, and we picked up her new glasses this morning. She wanted to be sure to get them before our trip to Arkansas next week. I guess she's a believer now!

I hate my transition lenses. The ones I have now are brown and they are not dark enough in the sun and I also always see a tint.My face looks awful with that brown tint. These are progressive lenses and my reading RX has changed so next week I am ordering new glasses. I have a pair of RX sunglasses that I'll go back to using.

Oh yeah, there is something else I don't like about them. When it is cold and sunny outside, it takes FOREVER for the glasses to return to normal when you go inside. I find myself taking them off when it is cold so that I am not walking around a store in the dead of winter with what appears to be sunglasses!

I agree w/this ^

My hubby and daughter have them and love them. To find out if they are right for you ask your licensed optician. Biggest misconception are that these work as sunglasses. They are not. They are a comfort lens they are not meant to replace sunglasses. UV index is what changes them, all cars have uv protection on windshields that is why they don't work in your car. Polarized sunglasses are the best for driving they take away glare. Sam's has them for around $95 for a complete pair. Find an optician that wants to educate you not just one who wants to make a quick sale then you can find your best option for you. Good Luck!:thumbsup2

There are different types of transition lenses now and the new ones change in the car despite the UV protection.

My son loves his transitions lenses. He had them two years ago and then we didn't get them for him last year instead we got him seperate prescription sunglasses. He begged for the transitions again this year because he said it is a pain to carry the extra glasses with him and change them back and forth when he needs to. I too have had them but went with clip ons this year.

I've had them for a year, and I hate, hate, HATE them. They are great glasses, but rotten as sunglasses. I like polarized lenses in my sunglasses, and I like them to block enough sun so that I'm not still squinting. With the Transition lenses, I still squint because they don't block much sun at all.

I get my eyes examed in two weeks, and I definitely won't get another pair.

Add me to those who hate them for all the reasons above. Also, on every single picture outside on your WDW vacation, no one will see your eyes. ;)
