Transfers and Use Year question....

This is all a bit convoluted, so please bear with me while I try to explain....

I have a small amount of points (less than 30) that I banked from last UY (April 08). It looks like we won't be using them this year either. Renting out such a small amount might prove difficult, and I would prefer transferring them out anyway.

The problem with transferring these points however, is that we will be booking a family gathering at AKL in April '10, so will need to have points transferred in for that one.

I know you can only do one transfer per UY, but these two situations fall over two different UYs (banked points transferred out for UY '09; AKL vacation points transferred in for UY '10)

If you are able to still follow this :lmao:, the bottom line question is: will I be able to do both transfers as they cover two different UY's....even though I really have to transfer the AKL points before UY '10 actually arrives.

LOL....well I guess that takes care of that problem!! :)
Thanks for the information...I was not aware of that rule!

To transfer points out during 2009 Use Year those points need to be CURRENT UY points ( from your April 2009 UY allotment ). As poster erionm stated your banked 2008 UY points may not be transferred ( and borrowed points cannot be transferred ) only current UY points are transferrable. If you can't make use of the banked 2008 UY points then give renting a shot; if you rent to a member at least you'd still be dealing with someone who understands how DVC reservations work, etc.

Good luck :goodvibes

OK...to add in some more confusion...(sorry, not trying to hijack...)

Say I want to take a trip in June 2011 and stay at AKV and I want to transfer IN the points to do this. We'll say the points are at AKV with a June UY. Since I can make the reservation with those points in July of 2010, when can I transfer them? Can I receive the transfer of 2011 points in 2010? Technically, they wouldn't be borrowed (since they would retain their UY) but can they be transferred 11 months before the UY begins?

And, along that line, let's say I *am* able to do the transfer in July of 2010. I have a Feb UY, so is that my transfer for my 2010 UY and the other person's transfer for their 2010 UY? Or is it their transfer for their 2011 UY since they are 2011's points? I am unclear as to whether the "one per UY" is applicable to the points themselves or what UY you are in when the transaction takes place.

I am so :confused3:confused3:confused3

The reason I am asking is because we are arranging a large gathering that requires us to transfer an entire UY's worth of points, bank them and then also transfer in the following UY's points. We will need every single point available and I do not want to mess up the transfers. On top of that, we are dealing with two different UY. We will be travelling in June and we have a Feb and a June UY involved.

Generally UY points can be transferred in once they are able to make a reservation, of course since the “detailed” rules about transferred points are not documented it is possible to get multiple answers from different CMs. I have learned that when it comes to transferred points it pays to talk to a supervisor immediately if you get an answer that does not make sense.

I looked this up in the Home Resort Rules and Regulations, which were included in my Multi-Site Public Offering Statement booklet given to me when I purchased BWV in 2005. Specifically, it is Section II -- Using Home Resort Vacation Points, Paragraph 4 -- Use Year, which reads as follows: "Subject to the limitations set forth in paragraph 4 below, at any given timee, there are two (2) active Use Years -- the current Use Year and the sucessive or next Use Year. Club Members may make reservations, Bank, Borrow, Transfer or exchange points allotted during the two (2) active Use Years only."

This makes it clear that the rules allow you to to Transfer points for your current Use Year and for your next Use Year. As soon as the transferring party is in their 2010 UY, then can transfer 2011 UY points to you. I once received 2008 points from someone in their 2007 UY. -- Suzanne

SuzanneSLO,

Great find, maybe you should email it to DVC since they do not seem to be able to find it and consistently train MS about it.

This is great news!

I have a std room booked for April 2010 and I was thinking of transferring IN some points to upgrade it. If I do it next month, that would be my ONE transfer for 2009, yes? (I would be IN my 2009 UY even though the vacation falls in my 2010 UY) Then, next June, I can transfer IN another xxx points, bank them, and repeat the transfer in 2011, correct?

I don't think that's right. The first transfer may take place in 2009, but it's the UY that matters, so that's your one 2010 transfer. Also, based on my experience, I would advise you to try to match up your UY with the person transferring in -- avoids the confusion.

That's what I was wondering....

If the points retain their UY (so assume I am transferring IN June 2009 points) AND I do the transfer IN 2009, I would assume that it would be my one transfer for my 2009 UY. Yes, the trip I am taking is in 2010, but it would still be in the June 2009 UY. Does this sound right?

Well, part of the transaction that I am doing is a reservation in September-October 2009. I made the reservation with my 2009 points, but I wanted to transfer in points and re-allocate to them. I was told that in order to do this, I needed to transfer in 2009 points; that, for example, December, 2008 points would not work, even though they should still be useable for an October, 2009, reservation. I do not know why, or whether that applies to your situation. I would ask MS a lot of questions before you try this.

The reason you wre told this by MS may have been that 08 may not have been an "active" UY for you at the time. To be specific, my understanding is that at this time, you cannot receive 08 UY points unless you are still in your 08 UY. So if you have a Sept, Oct or Dec UY, then you can receive 08 UY points. Because the banking deadline has expired for all 08 UY points, however, you should expect that you will need to use them before the end of their 08 UY or they will expire.

The only time I think there is any felxibility with what UY a transfer counts against is when the UY being received is for next year. So if you are in your 09 UY and receive '10 UY points, members have reported in the past being able to use that as their one and only 09 UY transfer OR their one and only 10 UY transfer.

When you are in your 09 UY and receive 09 UY points, I beleive the only option is to count this as your one and only 09 UY transfer.

Remember, calendar year does not matter. I have done a transfer out in April of 06 UY points (while in my 06 UY) and transfer in in Sept of 08 UY points (while in my 07 UY).

Best of luck -- Suzanne

Okay, now that explanation makes sense. I sorted out my problem today by speaking to a supervisor, but I have learned that transfers can be very easily misunderstood, by me and by MS.
