Please explain, on transferring points from your account into someone else's for their use. What are the benefits/cons.

Lets say, I need an additional 50 points for my trip. Someone is willing/selling to transfer the points into my account. Do they have to be the same use year? Would the transfer points expire?

The points keep their UY and home resort status. The expire like any points. You can't see the points online. Per DVC rules you can't be paid for the points, only DVC can.

Follow up question: What's the benefit to doing a transfer among DVC guests v. "buying" transfer points from DVC (which I guess you can only do 1x a year?)

You can transfer more points from another owner, isn't the DVC transfer limited to only 25 points?

FYI - the DVC transfer was put into place after DVC decided to change the required points for the SSR tree houses. They were originally sold as a tree house for the same points as an SSR 2 bedroom. After selling them out, Disney increased the amount of points required to stay there.

Transferred points retain their home resort, so you could get a transfer of points to use at 11 months. DVC's one-time-use points are only good at 7 months.

Since transfers are limited to once per UY per membership, it's unusual to find someone willing to transfer a small number of points. Folks will typically want to transfer their entire allotment of points. Banked and borrowed points can't be transferred, so folks with just a few stranded points are usually out of luck (because those are probably banked points or they would simply bank them to next year). Folks who don't need to use their points will want to get rid of all of them, and since they're limited to a single transfer, they aren't willing to transfer just 25-50 points.

There's a pretty good thread here somewhere that describes all the benefits and risks of transferring points.

That makes a lot of sense - Thanks.

The limit is 24 points. If you need 25, they'll be happy to sell you an add-on contract.
oh, of course.... duh! :rolleyes1

Also, you can only purchase one-time use points from Disney at the time of booking a reservation; you cannot purchase the points to hold in preparing to make a future booking.

Interesting. So the (24) one-time use points offer was not always an option; only implemented after changing the points requirements for SSR tree houses?

Correct, used to soften the blow to owners who ended up not having enough points to book their usual stay.

I believe (if my memory is on right now) if you have transferred points you can not use them to book online, you have to have member services make the reservation for you.

Also, if you have transferred points from next year, you can not borrow from them, meaning you will not be able to use then for this year, you can banked them, though.

You can't see the points online.

You can't see transferred points online or book them online unless they are the same resort and UY. My sister has the same resort and UY. She has transferred points on a couple of occasions and I was able to see the points online and also book reservations with the transferred points.

One time member services transferred the points to a different resort in my account and I wasn't able to see them. I had initially requested they deposit the transferred points into the same resort, but that was overlooked (probably because my contract is made up of a lot of small contracts and the person helping me didn't know it made a difference). But all's well that ends well-- she was able to fix it before we ended the phone call and I could see the transferred points :).
